Re: 3D Cockpit model
I'm not sure if D2X-XL has changed it, but the energy and afterburner bars were not animations in original D2 - the game painted over them with black pixels (a very lazy and ugly way to do it). Ideally I'd make it paint out the full afterburner/energy textures using alpha, showing the empty texture ...

Re: 3D Cockpit model
You've got smoothed edges on some faces. You'll want to reset all the vertex normals somehow.

Re: 3D Cockpit model
Ah yes, UV mapping.
Simple when you have it all figured out, but it's the figuring out bit that can be pretty frustrating. I don't work with 3DS unfortunately or I'd offer some tips.

Re: Pumo Mines Thread
Water is transparent by default in D2X-XL levels ... And so many authors put it on floors instead of making it a wall, and so they never take advantage of that fact. Also I did it before Azure Catacombs, but my D2X-XL Demo Mission isn't ready for release so you haven't seen it yet. So you mu...

Re: New Descent with Unreal 3 engine? (UDK)
The geometry is so simple that if you have to texture everything manually, it would be better to start over with better geometry. UE3 is capable of things that make Descent 1, 2 and most of the unofficial Descent 3 levels look like a joke.

Re: 3D Doors.
I think it was supposed to be an ironic comment along the lines of "if you won't polish this turd then why the D2X-XL project?" To risk overdoing the faecal references, some turds are harder to polish than others and this one is looking really ugly. I'm thinking a serious look at UE3 is on...

Re: 3D Doors.
How much time did it take to model and skin it? Depends on the artist. Making a ship model is trivial, I've done one in an afternoon. No moving parts, no problem. What you don't seem to get is that aside from the bother of having to replace doors with 3D objects, and then provide a collision switch...

Re: 3D Doors.
There's a whole lot less work involved in putting that model in the game than there is in 3D doors.

Re: custom crosshairs
In the old days I'd replace them using DTX, but D2X-XL may have a simpler way of doing it.
Any similarity between the D3 Mercenary crosshair and the TEW one is coincidental.

With the rest of the game full of flat surfaces, this isn't going to be time well spent.

There's no reason you can't get volcanoes in a desert environment. It doesn't tend to happen on Earth because volcanic activity tends to act against desertification for various reasons, but you still get some in close proximity (Atacama Desert is right next to an active volcanic region for example)....

Yeah, I figured that by the rest of your message.
I was just commenting on how there are large numbers of people who do, in fact, use lecture time to faff around.
