Yeah, well, actually I did not compile in debugger support.

Before I dig into this deeper, a question for the developer: Do you compile and test every version on Linux? In other words, are you sure this version is working OK on Linux?

trouble with Linux version (1.14.156)

Today I decided to finally update the Ubuntu/Debian Linux D2X-XL packages with the latest version (1.14.156 at the time of this writing). I have successfully compiled many previous d2x-xl versions from 1.14.66 up to 1.14.117, but even though I got 1.14.156 to compile, it does not run. After 1.14.117...

Too bad you didn't get a chance to try the install packages on Ubuntu. Maybe someday. In my experience, Debian is a lot better than Ubuntu (more stable). I use the KDE window manager. After I installed all the hires sounds for Descent 2, all my hires sound problems came to an end. :) So, I can say t...

Making D2X-XL check for missing files/directories is a very good idea. :) In Debian/Ubuntu linux, the concept of 'dependencies', which is enforced by the 'package management' system, give us some extra tools to avoid having someone try to run D2X-XL without the necessary data files. I took advantage...

I was very confused on the hires sounds. I had installed the 'sounds2' directory from the d2x-xl-data-<version>.rar file, and I thought that meant I had all the hires sounds fully installed. I didn't realize that there are only a few hires sounds (the addon ones) in the d2x-xl-data-<version>.rar arc...

Since you said hires sounds are working on your Linux build of D2X-XL, I have assumed that the problem is not in D2X-XL. My latest idea is that the problem might be in the fact that the supporting software packages I used have been "Debianized," which often cripples functionality that the ...

Glad to see you have linked to my D2X-XL Debian/Ubuntu repository, thanks. I have realized hires sounds are not played by my compilation. I'm still looking for the trouble in my configuration or in the dependency packages, and will post on this forum when it is fixed. However, the original midi soun...

I can second that: No stuttering on Linux (Debian Lenny) from versions 1.14.66 to current (1.14.100). I plan to install on Windows XP on the same hardware and post a performance comparison in an new thread.

The latest D2X-XL Ubuntu/Debian package files can be be downloaded at http://files.lstandish.com/d2x-xl but in order to easily install these packages, the files really should be in a "repository." Otherwise, if a user just downloads them and installs by right-clicking on the downloaded fil...

I think I found the music problem on Ubuntu. I had not specified timidity as a dependency, and I think the guy who tried it did not have timidity installed. I'm about 90% sure of this, but I will have to wait a day to ask him. I think you should list it too on your Linux installation page as a requi...

I was only speculating that the fact that music didn't work in D2X-XL might have something to do with the the D2X-XL version of sdl-mixer which was installed in /usr/local/lib. Maybe other programs were using the version of sdl-mixer in /usr/lib at the time the program was installed. I'm not saying ...

Confirmed working on latest Ubuntu

I had a friend with Ubuntu 9.04 (latest Ubuntu) try d2x-xl-demo on his laptop, and installation went smoothly. The program ran OK, but there was no music. I think this is probably a problem specific to this laptop with its Intel sound chip. Suggestion: it might help to reboot the computer after inst...

Debian/Ubuntu Repository Ready

Hello Everyone, It turned out that the trouble I had with the game locking up (when compiled on Debian Etch) was not due to any new problem in recent versions of D2X-XL. I found that every D2X-XL version (I tried 95, 93 and 88) gave the same trouble. I looked very hard for a solution. Unfortunately ...

I updated the D2X-XL version in the repository to 1.14.95, and tried it - got lockup after only a minute or 2 of play. So I rolled back the version to 1.14.93. It does the same thing. I tried 1.14.88 and it is OK, but was not compiled on my Etch server, so this could be a faulty compile. I have to t...
