Re: 3D Cockpit model
Can you make the two struts holding the pulpit roof rounded like the original cockpit, and maybe give them some more structure?

Re: 3D Cockpit model
I would be willing to remodel the struts. I definitely would like them to be thicker and sturdier (I assume that is what you mean by more structure).
As far as making them curved, I would personally prefer to keep them straight. I built this model to conform to the canopy on Metalbeast's pyro model which obviously has straight pillars on the windows.

I remember reading somewhere, maybe on this forum, that the curved struts in the original game came from an old design of the ship that had a rounded canopy. Apparently they never bothered to fix the cockpit texture to match the final exterior design. Bearing that in mind I will curve them if you really want me to. Just let me know one way or the other.

You are perfectly right. While the 2D cockpit has curved struts, all pyro models actually have straight ones.

Re: 3D Cockpit model
I will keep them straight then. I will certainly make them thicker though, and add some detail to the texture. I have a very busy week but I will get to them as soon as I can.

Re: 3D Cockpit model
Sorry for the long absence. I'm still adjusting to my new job which is going very well, but leaving me exhausted at the end of the day.
I have completely remodeled the canopy and thickened up the struts. Now I just need to remap them and create a texture.

Re: 3D Cockpit model
Sorry for the long silence.
Work has been insane for the last little while but it's starting to settle down. Hopefully I will be able to return to the cockpit this weekend.

Re: 3D Cockpit model
I've Finally had some time to work on the cockpit again. As per Karx's request I am adding detail to the newly thickened canopy struts. I have completely remodeled them to include channels to contain the glass panels. I observed something like that on the original 2d cockpit.

At this point they are still just solid models in Rhino. I will convert them to meshes next before unwrapping and texturing. These will be challenging as they have a ton of surfaces. This model though is just not the final one. I will use it to generate a detailed texture that I can apply to a simpler model via the light baking trick I learned a while ago.
Cheers

Oh yeah, this is looking more and more promising each time.
I'm pretty sure this will look totally badass being rendered in-game!

Re: 3D Cockpit model
Just finished another complete remodel of the canopy. I was not happy with the way the panels joined on the inside. The new one doesn't look too different but believe me it is much tidier and will be easier to deal with in the meshing stage.

I also decided to add a window opening in the rear to allow for a potential 3D rear-view. Progress is slow I know but I continue as I can.

Hey, all we offer is praise and we understand about "real world" responsibilities
If we know that progress is happening, we can't ask for more, after all, its another "labour of love"
Thanks for being willing

Hi,
wow, excellent work. That fits partially to the Hammerhead cockpit as well.

Re: 3D Cockpit model
The cockpit is not dead. At the moment I can only give it a couple of hours every few weeks but I am doing a bit at a time. Right now I'm working on converting the Rhino model to mesh for export to 3DS MAX. It is going slowly but well. I just wanted to let everyone know that I am still alive and still interested in this project.
