Fast way to make a big cube block?

Postby Red_5 » Sun Jun 15, 2008 3:31 pm

I need a block of cubes that is 9x9x13. How can I do this without sitting and individually adding each cube (the hard way)?

Quick copy/quick paste should do it. Make a row of 9 first off, copy that and paste until you have the 9x9 grid, then repeat for 9x9x13. You should now have an easy 1,000 cubes in a single room.

Can you only make a room that is a max of 1000?

Doesn't copying and pastinfg require you to join the cube sides?

I'm trying to make Blood Gulch from Halo here, btw. :D

Sometimes. Usually only when they don't line up well.

D2X-XL only supports 6000 segments, and using that many will bring almost every system to its knees. It is the wrong approach to build a complex level with a lot of segments; rather use bigger segments and split them where required. If you haven't built (bigger) Descent levels before, grab some good ones (e.g. Sirius' Anthology, some levels of Kruel or of mine) and examine them with DLE-XP first.

Hmm, would about 2,500 segments hurt systems at all? That's about what I'm looking at. Basically I just need enough cubes to make both a large terrain area and two small detailed bases at either end. I've got some ideas now...

I'll post the level here when I'm done!

You can start with some huge segments and split these into smaller parts with the "split cube command" as required. That would save you creating a huge grid of small segments. If I had a sketch of want you want to achieve, I might be able to help you.

I think I get what you're driving at...

Make the whole thing out of about 45 cubes, and then split/subdivide them until I have what I want?

Just a tip:

I dont think it is the cubes in total that kills performance, its how many that get rendered all at once.

One of the levels im making has 2600 cubes for just 3 central areas and so far my cappy low end PC has no trouble rendering it all. That same map will easily reach 5000 cubes after I finish the level with 1 large courtyard and another corridoor for the reactor room.

Most of the most cube-laden areas are closed off behind walls. So far so good.

Awww crap! Had I known about the "split cubes" thing I would have saved several hours of my life! Oh well, back to work.

Had I known about the implications of doing DLE-XP and D2X-XL, I could have saved 1000s of hours of my life plus a lot of trouble with people who aren't worth the air they're breathing ...
