The game of the decade

Postby Sykes » Thu Dec 03, 2009 4:26 pm

Gentlemen, it's come to my attention that there hasn't been a big online Descent game in years. According to Sirius, the last recorded 8-player game was 2005, and the last time 8-player games were even heard of was 1999. This cannot happen.

I count 8 or 9 people on these forums that are able to play online and are in the Steam Group. We should be able to pull an 8-player game off! I hereby vote we schedule a game. If everyone can agree on a time they're not busy, we can throw one of these together. Those are the 8 most likely choices for a full game, although I know pokeman7452, Captain Blackwood, and NEO-Thraka have been online before.

Think we could pull it off?

Pokeman made a new thread here about times. Discussion will continue there.

Two words: time zones. That combined with school and work makes this much harder than it seems.

I know how hard it is, but despite different time zones everybody has a weekend at the same time. Also, it's not like I asked anybody to take a break from school to get this together, it's up to them. 5 of the listed 8 players are in EST, and if the EST players can't set a good date with the Germany and Australia players, you (pokeman), Thraka, and Darklord are also EST (or near it). I think we have enough people to be flexible :)

USA and Australia are nearly halfway around the world, so it will have to be either early morning or late at night. Since we are factoring Euorpe as well, we will have to do it early morning in USA = mid day in Europe = late at night in Australia. This means Hawaii and Western North America are out.

It seems our best bet is:

04:00 AM - PST
07:00 AM - EST
12:00 PM - UK
01:00 PM - Germany, Spain, France
10:30 PM - Central Australia

Sirius is in Vancouver, Canada, which puts him 2-3 hours behind EST, so he probably won't be able to join. I don't know where blarget lives. We might be able to go an hour later, at AUS-RED-5's expense. We can only pull this off on a weekend unless karx skips work. Saturday would probably be best to give AUS-RED-5 a chance to sleep in. I don't mind getting up early.

So if we are going to make this work, we will need to establish a date and confirm all 8 players. I can build on this post to include more time zones and a list of who can play on what dates. If anyone else wants in on this, please speak up!

Confirmed interested:
Sykes
pokeman7452
PGMYRHNO / matt
blarget
AUS-RED-5
Thraka

Confirmed can play Dec 12 (times listed above):
pokeman7452
PGMYRHNO / matt
sykes
blarget

It seems our best bet is:

07:00 AM - EST (earlier for the rest of the USA, ouch)
12:00 PM - UK
01:00 PM - Germany, Spain, France
10:30 PM - Central Australia

I calculated based on

sykes, pokeman7452, Darklord, Beltran: EST, USA
kark11erx: Baden-Württemberg, Germany
AUS-RED-5: Adelaide, Autralia

So is that a yes or a no? :? Did you read my (rather long) post? If you can't play a game at 10:30 PM on saturday the 12th, then I should move the game forward an hour or two.
