Anyone up for playing some night GMT-5 from 8PM to 2PM?

Postby Yoshimitsu » Tue Mar 24, 2015 2:30 am

Greetings to anyone still listening. With all the excitement around Descent: Underground I am finally starting to take an interest in playing Descent with other people. I just recently had my first ever anarchy experience in D1X Rebirth but the ancient visuals hurt my brain so I have come here (as I should have done in the first place) to see if anyone might like to do some D2X-XL multiplayer.

I'm happy with pretty much any type of game 1v1, Anarchy, Coop, etc. I'd just like to do some flying with friends in the prettiest port Descent 2 will ever have.

I'm in the eastern time zone of the USA and available most nights from around 8:00pm to 2:00am. Sundays and Mondays I might have time during the rest of the day as well.

Cheers

I'm usually available on Saturday's night. My time zone is GMT -6 so no big difference with yours.

I tend to prefer coop and 1v1.
Although I must warn you that I'm NOT the best player around here (I'm more of a level designer), I'm pretty sure we may get som fun time.

I'd love to do some Co-op Pumo.
I am an avid Contra-Dancer in my real life and I do that on alternating Saturdays. Also sometimes Fridays and Wednesdays. I actually have dances this week March 28, and next week April 4, but I will most likely be free on April 11. If there are other possible times sooner though I would very much like to join you. I'm usually awake and alert late into the night so just let me know. I've invited my younger brother to join me as well when he gets a chance but who knows when that will be?

I have no idea how I stack up against other players. I can fly Single player missions comfortably at Hotshot while still finding them fun, and I'm just trying Ace (definitely harder but still a good time). I have no doubt I would enjoy flying with you. Just out of curiosity, what part of the world are you in? As my profile says I'm in New York State, USA. I'd also like to find out if you know a good way to communicate with each other while we're in game. I know Descent has messaging but that seems a bit clunky.

I am interested in Descent Anthology. I tried it a while ago and like it very much but I never finished even the first part. I wouldn't be opposed to played either of the original campaigns, and I'm certainly open to other suggestions.

NP, April 11 seems ok.
You just tell me the day and I will try to adjust my schedules if necessary.

I do have some Sundays available also, but that's a bit more variable, as once a month I get to work at a monthly event (a fan convention) that happens on a sunday (it varies which one, but usually the first or second sunday of the month).

Oh yeah, and as from what part of the world I'm in, I'm from Mexico.
It seems I'm the only hardcore and actually active latin-american Descenter on the entire community. :P

There was a guy from Argentina that I met some years ago on these forums, but he was not very active and disappeared from the XL community.

It's always great to find Descenters from other countries, Pumo. I love how far around the world Descent has spread.

Sundays are usually really good for me since I don't work that day. There's actually a decent chance that I will be available sometime this Sunday, March 29. I would really like to play so as far as I'm concerned the sooner the better.

Alter-Fox, you'd be more than welcome and if there are other times that are good for you too just say the word.

Actually, I think I might be available this Sunday... at least, in the evening. Do you have a venue in mind for working through the game setup stuff? Hosting, what level to play, reconvene in case something goes wrong in the game, etc.

This is great news Sirius! I'd love to have you along for the fun. As to your excellent questions I'm quite ignorant of the process involved so if I say anything foolish or naive please let me know, I very much want to learn.

I am open to suggestions about what type of game to play and which maps to use. My first choice would be co-op in Descent Anthology, but I'm totally up for some pvp too.

I don't actually know how complicated it is to connect with D2X-XL but if we decide to play on Sunday I will run some tests in the days before hand just to feel things out. My thought was to be the host for the games. I have a fairly stable 500kbs internet connection which should hopefully be enough. In the last few days, I've had my first couple of online Descent games via Rebirth. If D2X-XL's tracker works anywhere near as well as theirs connecting should be easy enough.

As to communication, this is one area where I am almost completely clueless. The only online play I've ever done outside of X-Box Live is Dark Souls with my younger brother and for that we actually used our cell-phones to talk. I am aware of Mumble and I've heard of Teamspeak but I've never used either. I have a microphone but no headset although I doubt that this would be a problem with either program. If worst comes to worst, Descent has its own messaging system. Other ideas would be welcome. The sooner I hear from any of you on the subject the sooner I can start educating my self on the system you think is best. As far as written communication goes, I see no reason that we can't use this thread, but again I'm open to ideas.

At this point I think I'll start a list of each of us and our time zones just to keep things orderly and see when might be a good time.

Yoshimitsu: GMT-5 (and maybe his brother)
Available and awake most weeknights from 8:00-9:00pm until around 2:00-3:00am local time. Busy Friday and Saturday this week, free Sunday.

Pumo: GMT-6
Possibly available Sunday

Alter-Fox: GMT-6
Available at shorter notice on random days?

Sirius: GMT-8 (I assume you're still in Washington State as per your avatar?)
Possibly available Sunday evening

Yoshi,

please read the info on my website about D2X-XL's tracker and how to use it. It is very easy to use. Since my last fixes of D2X-XL's networking code, connecting to a Descent game should work perfectly and the peer to peer communication should be rock solid (as long as your internet connection is).

Thanks Karx. I just read your multiplayer-how-to again and I'm glad to know that it's so simple to host and join games. My internet connection is indeed pretty reliable so hopefully everything should work with an absolute minimum of fuss and bother.

Now we just need to nail down a time (or times). It would be great to fly all together, but obviously that might not be possible for people in different parts of the world or with different schedules. I am hoping to play as much as I can so I'm more than willing to join different people on different days or times of day. :)

I'm in the same timezone as Pumo, but I don't know exactly when I'll be available especially on the weekend. My schedule doesn't tend to be known more than a day or two in advance.

Hey Alter-Fox. I would able to jump online at short notice on many nights of any given week including tonight and tomorrow. I'm generally free after 9:00pm (8:00pm for you). I've been keeping an eye on this thread so if you drop me a message here I should see it in time to join you for a game.

Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5). Right now I'm at work, just on a short break. Are you GMT+1 Karx?

I can't host, but I'm generally pretty flexible so I should be able to jump into one of your other games. Maybe even two or three. Don't worry about me.
