Alter-Fox, I don't suppose you might like to play for a little while tonight? I just got home from work a bit later than usual and I'm about to start dinner but in a couple of hours when that's done I would like to jump into my Pyro cockpit, say maybe 9:30-10:00 EST.

Sorry it didn't work Alter. After you left Karx popped back on for some serious bugfixing talk with others more knowledgeable than either of us so there's hope for another try later.

Things that might work:
Steam group chat - been a while since I've done this but I recall there was such a feature.
Possibly Mumble - I know Fox isn't a fan of the voice chat though, but it does support text if you need it. I know of a couple Descent-related servers, one run by the Rangers, the other something related to Rebirth, and while it'd be kind of funny to invade it for an XL game I'd probably advise against it. :)
IRC - not many people use it these days but I do still have a client for some reason.

I think my preferences run roughly in that order. I usually use Mumble for most Descent stuff and there might be other people on there at any given time, but there's also a pretty good chance you'll burn half the "playing" time trying to get them set up, so... up to you.

Thanks Sirius. I'll need to look into Steam group chat.

As a heads up, Karx11erx, Alter-Fox, and I just had an impromptu attempt via the Descent: Underground chat and it was a no go. It seems there are some problems in the networking code (which I am completely ignorant in) preventing us from connecting. Karx is working on a fix so We'll see how it goes. I'm staying optimistic though.

Alright. Well, I'm not impatient; if it's still a no-go by the weekend there's always the one after.

The fixed D2X-XL version is already online on the descent2 web server.

Thanks so much Karx. I'll grab it this evening when I get home from work and see if I can find you or anyone to test it with.

While we were trying to figure out the multiplayer D2X-XL locked up again and I had to do another hard shutdown of my computer... I didn't manage to get it back up and running until half an hour ago. It wasn't even on a loading screen this time.
I did manage to save the log file before my system underwent vital organ failure at least.
So I'm out. I don't think I can risk playing D2X-XL again unless it stops doing that or I can find someone who knows how to fix my system... the people at the store where I bought it aren't even willing to try.

Sorry to hear that Alter. It would have been fun. Good luck with your computer, and hopefully I'll see you in the mines eventually.

Btw, want me to change your forum nick (to "Splotchie")?

No luck tonight. I didn't find anyone to test with and got quite sidetracked in the D:U chat. I'll busy the next two nights but I will keep checking in. I'm determined play this awesome game with any of you who would like to.

On Sunday I think I'll be mostly free. With any luck Karx squashed all the bugs in the code :hammer: and we'll be able to play

Oh... okay, I know where that is. I have some other stuff to do later on Friday night but it should leave a little while to try something out after I get back from work.

Well ... I hope I did.

Last time I tested D2X-XL's multiplayer code has been a few months ago after a massive rewrite of the netcode. I used two computers and three to four game clients to connect to a match, and everything went well.

The crash bug we had experienced the other day has been fixed and has had a simple, non-critical cause (i.e. no deep roots in some complex, hard to debug code).

I have also improved the networking code in one small area to potentially increase its stability (that has something to do that D2X-XL's low level network code now runs in separate threads concurrently with main program execution, which means you need to make sure that the different program parts running in parallel do not interfere with each other by e.g. writing to the same data at the same point of time, or one part changing some data in the moment when the other part is trying to read it). This doesn't mean there was anything wrong; that rather was a improvement "just in case".

So what needs to be done next is to try D2X-XL out and see whether it works, and particularly, whether connecting to a game via the tracker works (again; It used to work flawlessly in the past, and as I didn't change that part of the code I do expect to work now, too).

I'll try to be in the D:U chat (my) tonight (I am on GMT+1).

And the guys you bought it from won't help you eh Splotchie? Sounds pretty typical. The other night when we were on chat it sounded to me like you don't have all of your permissions set up properly in Windows. Didn't you say you were denied access when you tried to end D2X-XL via task manager? I don't know much about it especially in Windows 8 but it seems that you might need to do some reading about setting permissions for different things (or did you know that already)? Don't you miss the days when being administrator let you do anything you wanted in Windows?

Hey Karx. I get home from work around 6:00pm. I think that's around 11:00pm for you. There's an 80% chance that I'll be going right back out tonight to go dancing but I'll look in on the chat at least to say hi and see if maybe we can have a quick attempt to network the game.

Off topic, I've been wanting to use that hammer smiley for years now!

You are very purpose-driven, can that be?
