IRC channel?

Postby longwinded » Sat Jun 14, 2008 7:10 pm

Back in the day, when I was playing Descent 2 over Kahn, players were recruited via Kahn's IRC network. In my opinion, D2X-XL could use a similar set-up: a #d2x-xl channel, be it on EFnet or DALnet or whatever network we agree on, where descenters could hang about and resolve the question "Wanna play?" fairly faster than what's possible on this webforum.

It would also make it easier to discover and fix network problems, I'm sure ... with regard to myself, I've changed some of my Internet router's settings (specifically, forwarding ports 28340-28360), but I'm not sure as to whether anybody else can actually see any of the multiplayer games I'm trying to host. Instant feedback via IRC would clear this up.

There are two potential reasons nobody joins your games:

The only currently available tracker is down (to check that, join a multiplayer game via tracker and check how many trackers are detected - may take 10 - 20 secs), or nobody is looking for a mp game (which is the most common case, unfortunately).

When I go to Multiplayer > Join network game (UDP/IP via tracker) > Enter client port (28340) > Netgames, it reports "1 tracker found". I don't see any games.

Nobody is currently offering a game then, but a tracker is online.

I am hosting a game now. Can you see it? Can you join it?

I am unable to check this myself, as starting up two D2X-XL instances simultaneously causes a crash. Thus I need external feedback.

The name of the game is "Retz' game". The level is Minerva.

By the way, if I press Enter in the "Select up to 8 players" screen, I get a warning that I "must select at least two players to start a network game". But other players can still join me in-game, right?

To hell with all these old overplayed crap levels like Minerva.

Why don't you guys stop playing the same shitty old levels that were already bad and ugly when first conceived?

Checking ...

I cannot see your game. Make sure to start an UDP/IP game via tracker and accept incoming connections for it (firewall/AV program).

The problem is, I don't have any firewall program (my Windows firewall is completely deactivated). The router has a firewall, but I have completely deactivated that too (and in any case, it should be overridden by the router's "applications and games" control - in which I've set up an entry for D2X-XL).

Edit: I think I have something in my stdout.txt! Here it is:

Code: Select all

IPX_udp: OpenSocket on D1X socket nLocalPort 28342IPX_udp: CloseSocket on D1X socket port 28342IPX_udp: OpenSocket on D1X socket nLocalPort 28342IPX_udp: CloseSocket on D1X socket port 28342IPX_udp: closesocket() failed on CloseSocket D1X socket port 28342.

I've done some testing with a friend now ... we could not see each other on the tracker, but we did manage to set up a game (which I hosted) by exchanging IP addresses.

I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, but if I doubleclick on the "1 tracker found" message in the Netgames screen, I get the following error message:

SORRY

YOUR VERSION OF DESCENT 2
DOES NOT MATCH THE VERSION
IN USE FOR THAT GAME.
(EXPECTED 4, GOT 0)

What does this mean?

Hey, there- a friend recently got me into this, I used to play D2 aages ago offline ofc, when it was cool. :D

But joking aside, I've actually gone and scripted a small host bot in #descent2 on Quakenet. It could be any network, though, if you'd all rather another.

You go in, and type !add, and it'll give you instructions on what to do (basically, you'll give your IP address and some other details).

Then, anyone can type !list to see the currently hosted games. The games stay up there for 4 hours before being auto-removed.

Any advice/suggestions will be welcomed- my main goal is to get some multiplayer games going! :]

RetZ,

that's pretty weird, and I wouldn't know of any output to stdout D2X-XL creates (maybe on Linux - are you running it on Linux)?

Actually, if you click on any of the 3 lines at the top of the tracker page, you get the message.

Hm. That could be because they don't contain any connection data, but are interpreted as such.

/me makes a mental bug ticket.
