Story behind your nickname

Postby Randor244 » Wed May 13, 2009 5:54 pm

Man, I'm making many topics here :D

Well, I'm just curious about your nicknames ;) What is the story behind them?

Mine is quite simple - Randor is a character in a fantasy novel I've written, and I just thought it fit. So my name is Randor244 in every forum on the web that I'm a member in. 244 is there for two reasons - to make it sound unique, and to be sure the name is not already taken...

How about yours?

Alter-Fox means "My alter-ego is a fox". It's that simple.

EDIT: I'm also known as Wazzazzle (or Wazz Azzle) on some sites (and in TrackMania). A few years ago, I wanted to sign up on facebook, but I didn't want to use my real name, and I didn't want anyone to think that what I was using was my real name. My brother suggested wazzazzle (it was a sound I had sometimes made when I was in a silly mood, but I didn't do that any more). Because facebook requires people to have a first and last name, I had to make it into two words, hence "Wazz Azzle".

Well for starters, Red 5 being Luke Skywalker's call sign from Star Wars.

Aus is my location - Australia.

When I lived in Texas, my call sign was TX|RED|5. Though I used Red5 in Kali for years (1997), but too many people were using the same name. So I added the TX and then later, Aus when I moved.

To understand my name I need to give you a quick history lesson.

I first started online gaming with Red Faction, which had a doctor as a multiplayer skin model. I always thought it was cool playing the game as a mad scientist so I picked that skin and chose a name to go with it: Dr Damage

Not very original no, it was not long before I encountered many other players with the same name. One time I played a game with 3 Dr Damages in it. It was then that I started caring about having a name that nobody else could think of themselves

The final straw came when hackers (Red Faction was plagued with cheaters) realized that you cant be banned if you have the name of someone else in the game, they plagiarized my name a lot and I got banned from one server incorrectly because of that. It was then that I started using a string of random numbers for my name.

Random numbers are hard to be known by so I later replaced that with my School National Student Number: BY-10183201, that way I was still numbers but people could use the BY to identify me.

I had that name for years but after moving from Red Faction to FreeLancer (an RPG) I felt it was time to give myself more character. I expanded the BY part to two letters that it could stand for....I came up with Bloody Yokel

I became rather famous with that name. At LAN parties people would always scream "You Bloody Yokel!" every time I captured the flag but it was also a somewhat vulgar and it served to insult myself. Sure it got me lots of attention but when I grew up and matured I realized people were treating me like a real Yokel online.

At LAN parties I began to experiment with my name, I wanted to keep the Yokel part that people knew me by, but the Bloody part had to go. I also wanted to keep my name simple and easy-to-say. All the while it needed to be unique, something that nobody else could think of.

I gave myself allsorts of random combination's at LAN parties: Yokelscience, Yokelactose, Yoko, Yokelsense, Yokelsasse.

I listened to peoples responses and interestingly enough nobody would pronounce the names I was giving myself properly. Instead they were all (subcouncously) merging together the names they noticed most and persisted in calling me Yokelassence

So I chose Yokelassence for the sake of my friends sanity, either way it was still an original sounding name.

To this date I still have not met anyone with a name like mine.

My name comes from my favourite book series "DragonRiders of Pern" In it, dragons and their riders live in a weyr and as I like dragons but thought that Dragonman was bit pretentious, I decided to use Weyrman.

The man loved "Prisoner of Azkaban"
Mine was the most unoriginal one i could come up with at the time. So i picked it. I think i was thinking of Darth Vader, either that or Dick Cheney

I use a few. I'll explain them in order

Disnamo - Anagram of Madison, which is a friend of mine I used to know. I decided to dedicate my alias to her :P

ChildofMaud - I switched to this because it was a little more catchy and easier to pronounce (and remember) than Disnamo. Used it for a very long time. Every (human) name has a "meaning", or a story behind it. Child of Maud is a variation of the name meaning of "Madison" (it's also translated as Son of Maud, or Son of Matthew, which is coincidentally my actual name. So basically, if I'm playing a video game, I'm playing as my own son)

Sykes - I switched to this due to the lack of originality of my last one. I don't like non-original names (like superstar42, or admiral awesome. Original names = Diedel, Karasu, Kylin, anything you could actually name something). Unfortunately, due to lack of creativity, Sykes wasn't made up by me. My best friend, who goes by the name Atten, was on a name creation spree a long time ago for an online game, and Sykes was one of them. I got permission from him to use it as my own, and I created my slogan "Y'just got Syked!"

Unfortunately, it has no relation to the name "Madison", like my old ones.

Sykes make me think of Sergeant Michael "Psycho" Sykes - a character in the Crysis game and the main one in its expansion Warhead :D

Man, these games are awesome :D

I wrote it already. Years ago, I was going by the nickname of "Diedel". Diedel actually is derived from my first name and had been used by my friends irl. It sounds nice and friendly and those who know me well irl know that I am rather soft under my hard shell. As you can easily change "Diedel" into something rather abusive, I was starting to look for something highly abuse resistant as a replacement. When I was poking around in my DSL connection data some day, I noticed this funny, weird and unwieldy "karx11erx". It actually is the name of a DSL access concentrator (a computer gateway gathering a lot of DSL access points) of the German Telekom I was connected too. So there I had my new nickname. It's hard to pronounce even in German, and I haven't found anyone yet who'd have been able to derive an insultive name from it.

Woohoo, I got it right! That was what I though of when I saw your name. In Freelancer, all the action is in "the Sirius sector", it's a real place!

Anyway, back on topic. My name's origin should be obvious (hint, it used to be pokéman). It is years old and I desperately need a new one. Karx, can you find another server name on that DSL connection for me? :P
