Despite what Bungie says, it's not the new holy grail of computer gaming, and I don't find it innovative at all. That was all marketing blah, imo.
However, it's a standard shooter & role playing game mix, and it is pretty well executed and polished. You are having story missions and on top of that there are regular random bonus events (like destroying a huge walker or hunting a strong enemy character within limited time), bonus missions (like make 100 kills w/o dieing, or gather a certain amount of some game item), and strikes, where you can make extra XP and money ("glimmer"). You gather XP allowing you level up, getting better armor and weapons. You can play coop with up to two friends (3 player parties), which makes it more fun. The game will scale enemies with player count.
The game offers three character classes, but as far as I can tell the differences aren't very big and the gun choice and special effects very similar. Maybe that will change at higher character classes.
The graphics are spectacular . You are indeed playing in a huge open world, and exploring can get you in hot water if you are hitting an area with monsters high above your own character's level. You are not being thrown into that w/o a chance to escape.
I have installed a game controller update today, making control more fluid.
All in all I find Destiny very well done and pretty entertaining.
