D2x-xl sucks because it doesn't even look good. It only looks good with all hires textures, models, and graphics but no computer can run or even load the game for all these features. Descent 1 and 2 are meant to be played in their original forms, because they look the best that way.
P.S. software rendering works better for Descent series lores textures and gives the game a more underground mood. sharp edges on textures makes it look more like rock.

Well, hires textures, sounds, models and effects work for most D2X-XL users, right? The most logical conclusion is that either that guy's computer sucks or that he lacks the technical and social skill to set up D2X-XL properly or ask for advice.

Btw, w/o hires textures etc. D2X-XL is vanilla Descent. Now on the one side D2X-XL looks bad that way, but on the other side Descent should be played vanilla style?

Anyway, who is this guy to make his personal taste and opinion a dogma? D2X-XL is far from perfect, but many people still like what it offers.

The guy's Youtube profile claims that he is 30. I think 13 might be closer to the truth.

I had actually thought that the age of bashing D2X-XL on principle had finally come to an end after the events around D2X-XL/Rebirth cooperation, but there are apparently some latecomers who haven't noticed yet that they are living in a past era.

Maybe this is just because I'm a latecomer to Descent II (I had D1 and D3 for much longer), but I'd rather play it looking like a relatively modern game and not something from 1996. And my brother's netbook can run it with hires textures and sounds. (And netbooks generally have crappy graphics cards and cpus). D2X-XL usually runs better than D3 on my laptop, and I can even play it if I'm waiting on a Trackmania server for someone to join... not really that CPU intensive (or it uses the CPU in a different way than other games).
And speaking of graphics: I've been on a tour of the Nickel Mine in Sudbury (twice or three times), and it looked more like D2X-XL than lores D2 .

As for stability: D2X-XL crashes far less than D3.

On a related note regarding hires stuff:

I've actually made conversions of all the D1 music to a more modern format (synths and effects and whatnot). I'm going to improve my D2 mixes before I release anything though. I believe such a modern looking game shouldn't use midi music .

Interesting, but I have my doubts you could play games on that. To keep size down and avoid fans, you'd need a low-powered CPU, limited or no GPU, a small SSD for storage... basically it'd be equivalent to early netbooks.
