D2X-XL v1.14 RC 4 Available - this time also for OS X

Postby karx11erx » Mon Mar 23, 2009 9:02 am

D2X-XL v1.14 RC 4 is here,

and we've got an OS X version!

Fixed a few issues that had been posted on SF.net. One thing simx and I found were crashes caused by gun fire and explosions when -gl_alttexmerge was set to zero (which can happen automatically on machines that cannot handle it even if set to one in d2x.ini).

Another big change in RC 4 is the removal of a lot of obsolete or "dangerous" ini switches (including -gl_alttexmerge which now will be forced to one unless D2X-XL finds the machine cannot handle it because it yields the better graphical output anyway).

I hope Pumo's various crash bugs when firing at boss robots and other nasty things flying around in Descent mines are an issue of the past with this release.

Wolfie's "zipping robot bug" needs to be reproduced by me first, but it's not such a big issue and only happens if "idling robot animation" is enabled which now only happens when robot AI is increased above the standard.

Static smoke can now be toggled in the effects menu.

Support for colorblind and epileptic people can now be enabled in the "Miscellaneous And Accessibility" menu, as well as support for notebook users (which will currently only enable the keyboard ramping controls, but can be expanded if necessary).

Have fun. :)

I've tested RC4 and as far as i can tell everything looks right!
Only a single (and indeed very small) bug, but nothing else! (will report it)

I didn't had a problem with PM or with bosses either.

This is almost finished!

I cannot tell how much I love the new UI and trimmed down ini file. I really have to say that simx was of invaluable help with this. :thumb:

Edit:

Pumo, I have fixed that bug and refreshed the RC4 rar file.

Well, after a while of testing, i couldn't find a problem on RC4 so far!!!

In my very humble opinion, RC4 is definitely the final version of D2X-XL! Everything works as never worked before! Couldn't be better! :D
I really think that D2X-XL is finished now.

Well ... I'm already having an RC5 with a few changes here:
  • Max. texture size will be 256x256
  • You will be able to set the ship's drag in SP games
  • D2X-XL will automatically use up to three render passes/face on "best" lighting (PP)

OK. Will test it. (and i hope it will be as good or better than RC4!)

Really Diedel, i think that you're very near to finally get your deserved rest from D2X-XL. :)

Well, that's what i would like to happen :P >_>
I think he really needs to rest from this project after so many years (i think since 2004).
Also he has suffered enough while doin' this project with so many flamewars and conflicts on the Descent community that he really deserves a break to actually enjoy his masterpiece instead of just trying to please all ppl out ther.

And regarding my personal experience, with a finished D2X-XL, i can work comfortable with my mission projects as i know how D2X-XL will function and how to use all D2X-XL features at most, without messing a lot with a lot of new features (that i think D2X-XL already has a lot and very cool ones!) that may change basic D2X-XL functions, and so i can also make my other objective true:

As i usually like to test D2X-XL, if it's finished i can finally play ALL my descent collection (even missions i've not finished to play since years) without worring about what to report, and thus this will make Diedel happier also :)

Oh, and Pyro:
even if Diedel may sound harsh to you about your issue, i think he's completely right as it's hard to optimize a so advanced program like D2X-XL
for a bad graphic chipset that isn't really designed to play games (you IGP may run the Aero interface, but it won't run real games like Unreal, Quake or Doom, Descent 3 or D2X-XL as it should be). At least you can be happy that you don't have a SiS (aka Shit is Shit :lolol:) chipset on your board.

D2X-XL v1.14 RC5

Postby karx11erx » Tue Mar 24, 2009 12:07 am

Fixed:

- D1 crash bug
- D1 sound bugs
- various problems related to handling of crappy gfx hardware

Pyro_2009, create a d2x.log with RC5 and e-mail it to me. I want to see what shader functionality your computer supports. Oh yeah, use WinXP and not Win7.

RC5 seems to work really well. I did have three points. 1) just a heads up really. System seemed to freeze on one of my deaths. It took about 20 secs to respawn again. Game was fine.. no crash. CPU is pegged while playing so perhaps it was something my system is doing.

2) I have been trying to play with the hires models to get them to be brighter. I like them bright so they are easy to see. However, some of them like the hostages and the shield are so very dark blue they are almost black and difficult to see. Could I be missing some of the files ? It only happens with some with the items and weapons. Just wondered if anyone else had this happening as well.

3)The last point is the 'ship orientation to the mine' option is one thing I always picked. Is there an equivalent option now? It helps me to not get vertigo while playing. :)

All in all it plays really well and I enjoy it Great work folks.
...going down again!

It's almost perfect. I've only found a few problems (I have to post them here because sourceforge won't let me make an account for some reason.)

The sound gets resampled to 44khz, so everything is insanely high pitched (which can be funny when you destroy the reactor).

It's impossible to change the keyboard ramping.

.ogg music doesn't work (the midi music plays no matter what.)

On the bright side, it hasn't crashed at all, and I have the highest framerate I've ever had.

And that was with what version? I have just testing all this with RC7 and it works flawlessly.
__________

I have only one significant bug left that has so far been experienced by three users and once me, and that is animations sometimes sliding or the fan in D1:FS level 1 being rendered with its two vertical halves exchanged every second frame.

If I don't find this soon, and no other severe issues crop up, I will release v1.14.0 in a few days.
__________

Now look at this: It's another release candidate!

Fixes:
  • Lightmaps too dark when loading another D1 mine after having exited the previous one and having watched the rendered exit scene
  • Doors not always properly working
  • D1 and D2 hires sounds not always properly loaded
  • Renderer not working right on "crapfix" (tm) graphics
  • Program crashing when using smoke effects and multithreading
  • And probably a few more I cannot remember right now

Except for the keyboard ramping bug, this version is perfect. (And I think I'm actually finding the game more fun with the keyboard ramping set to 75%). The graphics are the best I've ever seen in any Descent game (less pixelation than Portal, but with twice the framerate!) and this is with hires textures off.
