Regular brief pauses every 10 to 15 secs?

Postby karx11erx » Wed Aug 05, 2009 6:53 am

I am experiencing brief pauses when playing D2X-XL about every 10 or 15 seconds.

I would like to know who else experiences this and what hardware they are using, so please vote.

Since the previous note failed because people can't read, here some guidelines.

This vote is about experiencing regular brief pauses lasting a split of a second after which the ship spins around or fires a bunch of shots at once.

It is not about singular pauses after program or level start.

It is not about pauses every 10 or 15 minutes.

It is not about sound stuttering.

It is not about any other bug or flaw or whatever. Post these here and my wrath will surely come upon you.

So if you have these regular brief pauses whenever you play, cast one of the "yes" votes. Otherwise cast the "no" vote. If the pauses come somewhat more or less frequent, cast a "yes" vote.

Stutters (1-4sec) with crazy spinning I have under WinXp 32/64bit when I set under ATI control panel the v-sync option to off/default and my samsung printer control panel is active!
Turning printer manager off and set v-sync to always on no stutters ocur. Running a ATI HD3870 X2 with Catalyst 9.5 on AMD Phenom II X4 3,6Ghz 4Gb ram.
Under Win7 x64 I must also set v-sync to always on or I get the crazy spinning all 30 - 60sec.

... And that's what happens exactly to me but with different frequency, so my vote was valid on previous poll.

The difference is that it happens every 5 to 10 (sometimes even 15) minutes (not every few seconds) while in gameplay and it lasts a few seconds.
I never said it happened while loading a level, loading the program or something like that >_>

The ship goes mad after the brief pause, just like the description.

I would like to state for the record that I did not vote in the previous poll and refrained from doing so until I knew exactly what 'pause' the poll was referring too. I take no responsibility for any poll skewing

Now that I do, I will cast my vote to 'not for me' as I do not experience pauses regularly.

I do however experience a single pause of a similar nature where...
after which the ship spins around or fires a bunch of shots at once.

Compared to what I described in the other poll, my post was in fact addressing the same problem but I am nowhere near as badly affected.

Pumo,

where is 10 to 15 minutes anywhere near 10 to 15 seconds? You do not have the same effect!

Yoke,

if the shoe doesn't fit you, don't put it on. ;)

Well, it's true that it's not the same, but it's almost.

However, i made some tests and this is what i noticed:

I normally use high quality light setting, no coronas, basic smoke, etc and it pauses every 5/10 minutes.

However, i've tested a moment ago with default pilot (that has higher settings) and it started to happen every few seconds. So it may be related to some high-quality setting (coronas, light, etc). Of course, my computer is not top-end so with high quality settings the frame rate is low, but the pause/mad ship effect happens as you describe it.

Almost? 10 minutes is 60 times 10 seconds, thats over 1.5 orders of magnitude.

The question is which setting might cause this. I had played in debug mode yesterday, turning off everything (even geometry rendering), only playing in wireframe mode (i.e. you only see lines on the screen). Still happened, though less frequently (maybe every minute). Problem is that it freezes so briefly on my computer that I have no chance to manually interrupt program execution in the debugger and see which part of the code is just being executed.

'Almost' just because the effect is the same (few seconds freezing, mad ship afterwards).
Of course the time is a LOT different :P

But yeap, it's weird, and even more 'cause the effect varies from computer to computer. It seems it will be hard to track.

I have 2 computers in the house that exhibit the same issues as Pumo's. Both are configured as below, with exception of the video card model.

Windows XP SP3
Dell P4 3ghz w/3gig Ram
nVidia 9800 GT

You may have to slow down your computer via bios settings to play like us mortals. :)
...going down again!

Stuttering as described every 10 seconds on ATI 850 XT AGP, Catalyst 9.3. Vsync off. Will try the game on my Nvidia 260 GTX too.

I agree with Pumo. I sometimes get the EXACT symptoms as you describe Diedel when I play, but it happens randomly and I can't really pin a consistent time with it. It seems to happen more often when a robot is destroyed right in front of my view though.

Life is like Descent, you defeat enemies, get stronger along the way, you earn extra chances, you can clear out a "safe" zone you can go back to, you have a place to "re-fuel," after each goal you can get out before it blows up in your face, there is a big challenge that fights you every so often, and at then end you get so see the credits... if your a good boy. Well, this is interesting: I have no stuttering at all on Linux (+ ATI).

I can second that: No stuttering on Linux (Debian Lenny) from versions 1.14.66 to current (1.14.100). I plan to install on Windows XP on the same hardware and post a performance comparison in an new thread.
