Weyrman,

I know the exact date when the forum was created (it's MetalBeast's and my registration date). The question is: What was the day that I started to work on D2X?

The first file I found back in '04 has a date July 15.

I know it's not the very first, but it would have to be one of the first that I downloaded in the beginning.

This file is before '05, before version numbers (suggested by me) and before D2X-W32. ;)

The time Diedel started re posting in the .net forum was Feb 10, '05. Page 10 - Old Skool

You know, It seems like yesterday I downloaded W32 for the first time when the feature set was pretty limited... Still, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Still do. :D

I guess at that time I was more or less interested in playing Descent 2 on modern hardware without many problems. Other than the fusion power, resolution, and filtering options, there wasn't much there. I didn't really guess it would get all the way to colored lighting, individually-rendered shadows, hi-res textures, hi-poly models, extremely accurate collision detection, radars.... The works. I've been impressed, Karx. :)

Well, another year has passed, and the D2X-XL project has had its 7 year anniversary.

We're still at v1.15, but nevertheless lots of good things have happened, like the DLE-XP overhaul, multiplayer finally being fixed for good, performance bottlenecks having been removed, and multiple ship support as well as new effects (glow, shockwaves) having been added. If you read the v1.15 version history your main impression will be a long list of "fixed, fixed, fixed, improved, fixed, fixed ..." comments, telling that the majority of changes were bug fixes and improvements, meaning a considerably more stable program today than a year ago. :)

Another year has passed, D2X-XL has turned 8 and is still alive and well. The last year hasn't seen big new features, but rather optimizations and bug fixes, bug fixes, bug fixes - which translates in increased stability of the game.

DLE-XP on the other side has received some enhancements worth mentioning besides a lot of bug fixes: You can now downgrade Descent 2, Vertigo and D2X-XL levels to Descent 1, and a new segment splitting scheme allows for quick refining of coarse geometry.

We'll see what the next year will bring. :)
