That new video is quite cool ! Btw, my d2x-xl looks different. Some textures look much better in this video than on my pc. You used the 570 GTX ? Wanna have it too ;-).

The new explosion (debris ?) looks cool but it is a bit too much fire (imo).
Maybe only every third piece should burn and smoke, every fifths should smoke ?

Frusti,

not having every particle burn might be a good idea.

Awesome.

In a similarly dumb incident today, I'd spent several hours trying to fix a weird build error I had yesterday. I finally gave up and e-mailed a mailing list for ideas today, and one of the replies I got back was to try restarting the build shell.

It worked. Image

On another aspect of that post, I love factorials. Everyone else hates them. :D

The ! operator in C is logical not. Factorial would appear in mathematics on the other side - in C it would be a library function.

Regarding the last dev blah entry, it seems like a very good improvement, but there's a issue that bugs me and comes to my mind: I noticed that you started to improve lightmap calculation since 1.15.212, right?

I think that during the proccess something went wrong as I found a possible bug (that I reported already at SF.net) where the lights doesn't sums up nicely (I don't know if I can call that additive blending, or something) and the light casted from weapons and explosions are dull, unlike previous D2X-XL versions.

If it's something related to visibility precalculation and lightmaps, would the new changes left the 'dull' dynamic light issue as it is? If it's a bug, no problem, as it would be fixed I suppose, but if it's a consequence of the new visibility calculation methods and stuff , you (Diedel) should definitely check that out, as now D2X-XL lighting doesn't looks as nicer as before. :away:

Maybe I'm saying something very dumb, being no programmer myself, but I thought I should give my 5 cents regarding all this lighting stuff (as I've been always a lover of D2X-XL light effects since some time already ;) ).

Actually I should clarify why I haven't responded to my (ahem) bug ticket...

I'm updating to Win7 shortly (as soon as I find my Windows 7 CD  ).
It seems I'm the only one who can't start D2X-XL at all in the latest version (I rolled the version back to 1.15.178 so I can still play), and AFAIK I'm the only 'regular' here who is (still) on Vista... and the problem looks like it's related to the OS. So upgrading to win7 might fix it... and I'm doing that anyway (like I said). And to be honest my OS badly needs a reinstall or upgrade... it's really going to hell right now.

Also, to clarify something else, I've already (starting several months ago I think) been attempting to roll back Microsoft Visual C++ to the 2008 version... Windows, in its frustrating way, gives me an error that I already have a newer version installed... and keep in mind that I'm trying to rollback, not install fresh... Only Microsoft could be so stupid that they break a key feature of their own operating system with another key feature of their own operating system...

[Insert Microsoft Stupidity Rant Here]

Incidentally, do you know which programs I've found are most likely to crash on Windows? Microsoft Office :clue:

You don't have to roll back Visual Studio/MS C++ - they can and will co-exist. Even different redistributable package versions of the same VS version do co-exist. Moving from Vista to Win7 is definitely recommendable though.

Pretty neat about the view culling!

It needs to update the camera angle for the death sequence though because the game isn't rendering what is behind the ship. I'm sad to say I saw this twice in quick succession... I'm not fond of those mercury missile bots in tight quarters.

PS the dissapearing/reappearing floor issue I had in the downloaded version of 213 is fixed.

Well, so it seems the problem is my computer.

On Diedel's side, light looks nice according to what he said.

So just to be sure before making any conclusions (and before buying anyd new hardware and stuff), anybody here is experiencing this since version 2.15.212?:

Flare shot at red door comparision:

Note this is noticeable at high/highest light quality settings only (when using lightmaps).
If it's just in my side (as the coronas issue) then I will see what I can do.
