Always fun to play them with both :)

Always D2X-XL, I see no reason to use anything else as it does it so well.

Usually I use D2X-XL for everything Descent, but if I feel like nostalgia (which is rare :P) I use Rebirth instead of going to all the trouble to set D2X-XL up for nostalgia mode (yeah, I know it's not that hard but I have my reasons). Generally I think the changes D2X-XL makes (e.g. the inventory) work better than how the game originally worked so I'm not fussed about "But it's MEANT to be played THIS way and if you don't play it this way you're a heretic and don't deserve to exist!"
Besides, I seem to remember that most of the people who made Descent, and who still play it, use D2X-XL, so I'm kind of inclined to think of D2X-XL as the "official" port. :D

Well, the question is not whether XL does nostalgia mode "adequately", the real question is who does that best. My point is that, I personally find playing XL in non-enhanced mode a bit obsolete. The reason I use XL for ordinary missions is for the high-res models, effects, textures on that standard mission. Which leaves Rebirth for everything else, since it does it best. No overlap here. 3 different gaming modes.

Personally, I find playing Descent in "nostalgia" mode on any of the versions horrible. Playing Descent like that doesn't raise any positive feelings in me (like those I had when first playing it). It was great at its time, but reviving those feelings is like trying to revive a dead corpse: IT may move, but it's still undead. :P

I mostly added that to save people requiring to install two Descent programs.

It depends whether I have to play it with anyone else.

There are few "single player" missions that don't actually support co-operative, so I still have to consider it. Except for missions I've worked on personally, I haven't played non-XL-only single-player missions outside of co-op for ... I don't even remember how long, probably been at least 5 years.

Oh, there was the one exception: livestreaming D1/D2 from ... DOSBox of all things. I forgot what the issue with video capture + XL was in the circumstances (it does slow down a lot with Anthology on any decent graphics settings but that's a different story), but I remember Rebirth very well: it somehow manages to cripple turning speed with FMLE running. Never did work out why - DOSBox is nowhere near as efficient, it just works better.

With DOSBox whenever I play either D1 or D2, I have problems with the game... and DOSBox... crashing. :clue:
