D1 remix update!

Postby Alter-Fox » Fri May 11, 2012 7:19 pm

For those of you who never venture farther into murky depths of the Descent community than the safety of this board, and also like my music... if you exist, it's about time I posted an update for you on my D1 remixes. Again, I'm planning to eventually remix all 26 songs from the soundtrack (not counting the endlevel theme). So far I've done six of them. Only 20 more to go!

Anyway, here are those six (in level order). I think you have the ability to recognize what each song is a remix of, so I'm not going to waste space telling you :P. Instead I'll just tell you the title and a short description.

Sol Industry:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=827
Remixed by popular request (and by that I mean Xaihyv asked me to remix it :P). It sounds a little bit like Half-Life, and it's the iconic song for its... icon. You'll see what I mean when you click the link.

Swarm:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=655
Buzzy. The vocals are by a swarm of secondary lifters (aka Vertigo Fox).

Haywire:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=656
Reinterpretation of background sound fx from the original. The original was the "cool" song from D1. So this is the cool remix of the cool song.

Pieces:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=774
The title says it all. But what is the title saying? Even I don't know. Very techy sounding remix of one of Descent's more iconic songs.

Assembly Line:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=657
It may be a little bit harder to figure out what this one is a remix of just because the rhythm is so much heavier than the original. But the fact that it's for the level after Pieces might help a bit. Also, yes, there is a theme to the titles for the Uranus levels. And that theme continues with...

Infection:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=825
The genre is Zombie Apocalypse -- or Medium Lifter Apocalypse I guess. But Audacity doesn't include either of those so I had to go with Metal. Do you think you know what the title of the Game21 remix will be now? Guess. :D

Anyway enjoy these if you exist. I definitely enjoyed making them.
In closing, :laola: because that makes no sense.

Actually I'll need to take them down soon, because of Descent UDK (aka Sol Contingency) and developments there that will soon require me to sign an NDA.
Still, I'm glad you like them. All of the ones I made before Descent UDK started (I did four more covers afterwards specifically for Sol Contingency -- 3, 9, 17 and 21 -- but I can't share those) should be in that folder on Planetdescent and if you go up to the actual folder level there should be a button to download them all, somewhere.

And of course anyone who likes these should check out my original work.

I need to get Kontakt and Superior Drummer reinstalled so i can do my final remixes of the Descent music. After fooling about for 4 years. I think it's time I did one last remix (a fucking good one) and done.

Try getting a better balance between instrument levels this time.
I liked the mixes you did before (although I haven't been able to find them since I reinstalled windows :( ) and they sounded good on my laptop speakers but when I listened to them on headphones or on my better speakers the instruments were either almost imperceptibly quiet or so loud they drowned everything else out (and when those were instruments that came in halfway through the song... ouch!). My rule of thumb is to always do the mixing work with headphones at a moderately high volume (lower quality headphones may actually be better for mixing than studio quality headphones, but they need to be good enough to have a decent amount of dynamic range and frequency range, otherwise you can't hear the subtleties of the mix. A 5-dollar pair isn't going to cut it, but a 20- or 30-dollar pair usually does). When the mix is done on headphones you can hear the dynamic range and the frequency range so that you can make a mix that sounds good on mid-to-high quality equipment (and other headphones), and it will still sound good on lower quality equipment like laptop speakers.

I also remember some mixes were turned up so loud there was an awful amount of clipping. In order to do that you need to put some sort of compression on the master mix, simply turning it up isn't going to work. I may be remembering this part wrong though.

I'd still love to hear if you have some original work, the sorts of synths and guitars that you used on your remixes really intruiged me, but I can't really tell anything else about what it would be like other than instrument sounds :P.

Yeap, as Alter said, those are good tips to audio mixing and mastering.

I use some pretty good Yamaha headphones in the 90~ Dollar price range, and they have an excellent dynamic range, and along with a good pair of speakers connected to a Sharp mini component with some good basses and a bunch of great VST plugins, I can mix and master my songs pretty decently.

Anyway, What I suggest you (Blackwood) to boost volume on your songs without distortion and/or clipping, is to use a limiter/maximizer VST plugin.

Here you can find some nice free limiters/maximizers:

http://freemusicsoftware.org/category/free-vst-effects-2/limiter

That's the most easiest and and pretty straight-forward way to manage overall volume over a song mix.

Of course, It's MUCH better to use a multi-band compressor along with exciters, equalizers and stuff, but for a quick work a limiter/maximizer would do it. :)

Yes, the tracks are very fit subject levels. But, if possible a little criticism. Music is too "busy". It should be "easier." Music should be a "background." It should "complement" picture. Yours tracks too "independent."

Besides, if I can give an opinion. Descent to UDK levels for the atmosphere that music will not fit http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... xOxiOQ4sXU
In my opinion, music should be in this style: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vUK8MNsakA

Well, luckily (at least in my opinion) the boss on that project disagrees with you. There were a couple tracks that he even explicitly told me he wanted if possible, even if I wouldn't be contributing other things. When I write soundtracks I do what my boss on the project wants. It's the best way to not get replaced :D.
Sol Industry in particular is practically... ahm... I guess you could say concept art, if concept art was music, as well as being a game track. Because it sounds so cold and mechanical, in a game about working for a soulless corporation and stopping mechanical foes from running rampant it's probably perfect :P.

You can find some of my original work on https://soundcloud.com/snowfoxden. There isn't enough room on my account to show off everything I'd like though. Some really good tracks have to be missing.

As well, the video of Descent UDK you posted isn't in any of the actual levels from that game. That was a proof-of-concept video in one of UT3's default multiplayer maps as far as I remember. Showing off nothing but the Descent mod because at that point we had no actual game content! You should see the visual style we're actually going for. It's much cooler than that mess of pipes.

:D
yes, these your works only confirm your style. It is pleasant to me that listening which it is possible to draw mentally pictures and to feel the atmosphere Descent. Certainly, I can judge music in Descent to UDK only on that video. There music absolutely "flat" and "not topical". I only expressed the opinion, wishing to help with something. Anyway, it is visible that you possess a certain talent and creative intuition. It is possible to wish to you only successes and good luck.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to dismiss your criticism out of hand.
I just have a different idea of what sort of music is good for Descent. And the people I'm working with have the same idea that I do. At the point we're at it wouldn't be a good idea to change that idea.

BTW, you mentioned on the DBB that you liked to play Descent with trance and that sort of electronica. Have you heard the soundtracks for The Entropy Experiment and Entropy 2? Those were both trance-ish OSTs by Luke Schneider (ages ago, long before I started writing music :D). You'd probably like them.

mixes of "Disko Nevada" it is impossible to call a trance probably :) It simply music from that time. (if interested, one of these mixes: http://files.mail.ru/BD290E56B9B44FEFA52C683173E8EB13) That to me doesn't cease is pleasant when I play Descent.

Yes, soundtracks to Entropy Experiment sound harmoniously. I like it.
I now am not ready to offer something concrete that would be suitable for the new project... I can tell only under what approximately music to me is pleasant to be played Descent 1-2, ok?
