D2X-XL uses a modified/extended version of the proprietary Descent 2 level format (RL2). It's not particularly portable unfortunately so if you wanted to convert them to UDK it would need a custom tool. However, I see no reason to believe it isn't possible.

It ... well, the results would be less than impressive. Just to warn you. :)

the only solution is use the descent tool LVLView32

This tool export the levels of D1 and D2 in AutoCAD DXF format , UDK can import dxf format, and then texture the level manually.

The geometry is so simple that if you have to texture everything manually, it would be better to start over with better geometry. UE3 is capable of things that make Descent 1, 2 and most of the unofficial Descent 3 levels look like a joke.

Not just like a joke - rather like 2D.

There is a new video that shows a somewhat more realistic attempt:

We'll see how the project goes. Could be interesting. :pop:

I know what you mean by "a somewhat more realistic attempt", but copying/ importing sounds and models from the Descent series isn't realistic IMO.

It's great to see that someone is still attempting to do a UDK Descent version, but I'd rather have a non Descent clone look.
Sites and sounds of the UDK weapons and original models would be more appealing.

.... but that's me... ;)

Good luck to the Dev/s for this project! I hope nothing but the best and look forward to play testing this conversion when it's (if ever) release. :)

+1

With the UDK framework there is possibility for making a brand new game, but lot's of workhorse is needed, especially then being fanmade. A very thrilling prospect regardless.
