Speaking of hostages, it seems to me that most hostages seem to be facing away from the door you enter through. Does anyone else find this?

Sprite based hostages are always facing you, that's how it's coded into the program. 3D hostages face whatever direction the level author made them face when putting them in the level, and whereever the model author made them face (usually that's not the problem though). So it's a question of where do they face when examining the level with a level editor like DLE-XP.

See, the hostages are facing away from the entrance door and grate separating their prison from the next room.

Correction:
Hostages are always facing you, but only on two axes. The vertical axis (i.e. if you are above or below a hostage) does not rotate a hostage to look at you. The result is the hostage looks flat as a pancake.
Some people are like Slinkies. They aren't really good or even useful for anything but they always manage to put a little smile on your face when you give them enough of a push down the stairs.
