DosBox problem

Postby Guidebot2 » Mon Jun 10, 2013 5:34 am

I know this problem isn`t for D2X-XL, so I posted it on General.
So, when I launch Descent or Descent 2 from shortcuts (through DosBox), I can`t see the game. I only see black screen. I can hear the sound, but I can`t see the game. ALT+TAB resolved the problem, but the resolution of the game is only 300x600. (not fullscreen and windowed) I already posted this on gog.com but nobody responsed. Can somebody help me? (FYI, I have DosBox 0.74)

It sounds like a video rendering problem.

Try editing the .conf file that pertains to the Descent dosbox shortcut.

I don't have the GOG version so I don't know where exactly the .conf file may be, but I do use DosBox so I suppose the rules are more or less the same. :think:

Anyway, in the .conf file (wherever it may be in your folder structure, hopefully in the same folder where Descent is installed), try changing the 'output' line to some of the available values for DosBox (surface, overlay, opengl, openglnb, ddraw), like this:

output=overlay

Usually overlay is the less error-prone of the modes, followed maybe by ddraw.
Also specify your original monitor resolution if possible in the 'fullresolution' line, like
this:

fullresolution=1366x768
(I put 1366x768 as an example, but put instead your correct monitor resolution)

See if that helps. If you're not sure where the .conf file is, maybe in the shortcut properties you may hopefully find some hint. :)

output=surface, overlay, opengl, openglnb, ddraw
fullresolution=1366x768 (my resolution)
At output I tried all, but not working. My game`s screen is black.
Any ideas?

Use taewong's build, its built off of newer code and has a lot of new features and fixes .
http://ykhwong.x-y.net/.

That said with default dosbox disable doublebuffering and it should work. (taewong's should work eitherway)
fulldouble = false d2 has issues with it in svga mode in normal DB

I always go with opengl or one of the directx modes in taewong's build. That way it uses your graphics card a little and is much more stable.

I also recommend resolution 0x0 (defaults to whatever res your screen is set too)
