Descent - The Complete Music Collection (FLAC) (WIP)

Postby ArtOfShred » Mon Jul 15, 2013 6:16 am

Hey everyone, Iron_Ian / ArtOfShred here with a project I've been working on for a while. I've done my best here to compile all of the official Descent series of games soundtracks in the highest quality possible! It could still use some work, and we are missing some potentially unreleased audio, but this as far as I know, is the most comprehensive collection of Descent music in high quality posted in one place to date. All soundtracks listed here are in the highest quality I could obtain. Redbook audio is ripped to FLAC with EAC, and the Playstation soundtrack .XA files have been converted with PSound/Foobar2000. In addition I've included two recordings of the midi soundtrack for both Descent 1 and Descent 2 with a few bonus tracks as well.

That said, this is a work in progress, and I've made notes to accompany each individual soundtrack. I've put a lot of work into compiling all this audio for the community. I hope you guys enjoy the most comprehensive music release to date for the Descent series of games! More valuable than anything to me however, is your feedback on the release!

Thanks for viewing and I hope you enjoy!

Also special thanks go out to:
Tim Jones for releasing the loseless versions of the original Descent 3 cinematic audio!
Pumo of Planet Descent for his providing the OPL3 midi soundtracks!
Mark Morgan and Tim Wentz for responding to my email inquires.
And the Planet Descent community for their feedback, contribution and support!
DOWNLOADS:
You can find all the soundtracks in a MediaFire folder here: http://www.mediafire.com/folder/0r1um9t99v033/Descent_-_The_Complete_Music_Collection
I previously had a torrent file up, but considering it is outdated now I will wait until everything is absolutely finalized before I upload another torrent release.

The Descent Midi Soundtrack recorded in two forms:

DOSBox OPL3 Emulation: Pumo of PlanetDescent painstakingly recorded these track by track through DOSBox OPL3 emulation and the Descent Setup program. Note that the extra tracks here from the shareware version are actually no different than the retail release version songs when played normally. However they lack the FM audio support of the retail audio so therefore sound different when played in OPL3 FM.
Roland SC-55: Recorded on a Roland SC-55 by Brandon "MusicallyInspired" Blume, you can find these and more here on his SC-55 recording page on Duke4.net. The Descent soundtrack was composed with a Roland SC-55 so this is considered to be "the way it was meant to be heard," and it sounds great. My only work here was renaming the files with the title of their corresponding ingame level.

The Descent Soundtrack was composed by the Descent II Redbook audio artists, however individual track artist information is unknown. I'm not a fan of bloating my tags with insanely long artist tiles, however if you feel like replacing my "Interplay" artist substitute you can edit the tags easily in MP3Tag and fill the info in:
Artist Line: Brian Luzietti, Jim Torres, Ken Allen, Larry Peacock, Leslie Spitzer, Tim Wiles
Album Artist Line: Brian Luzietti/Jim Torres/Ken Allen/Larry Peacock/Leslie Spitzer/Tim Wiles

Roland SC-55: Recorded on a Roland SC-55 by Brandon "MusicallyInspired" Blume, you can find these and more here on his SC-55 recording page on Duke4.net. Track 8 is a remix of the Title Theme by the original composer Dan Wentz, recorded on a Roland PMA-5. You can find more of his work here. Track 9 is a bonus track included from a fan mission made for the game aeons ago called Vampyro. Dan Wentz composed the music for this map, so I've recorded it with an SC-55 Soundfont. Note that it isn't perfect compared to actual hardware but it is pretty damn solid. The soundfont can be found here: http://www.youtube.com /watch?v=1tmN1a3cDMg#

Descent MacPlay Soundtrack (1995)
Album Artist: Allister Brimble
13 Tracks (FLAC)/(MP3, 320 kbps, 44100 hz)

01 Primitive Rage - Allister Brimble (06:09)
02 Outerlimits - Allister Brimble (02:36)
03 The Escape - Allister Brimble (00:21)
04 Ether in the Air - Allister Brimble (02:37)
05 Robotic Menace - Allister Brimble (06:41)
06 Virtual Tension - Allister Brimble (04:36)
07 Time for the Big Guns - Allister Brimble (02:57)
08 Mystery Metal - Allister Brimble (07:01)
09 Hydraulic Pressure - Allister Brimble (07:35)
10 Not That Button! - Allister Brimble (06:05)
11 Industrial Accident - Allister Brimble (04:30)
12 Overdrive - Allister Brimble (03:08)
13 A Big Problem - Allister Brimble (07:04)

There is a lot of debate over what the proper track title names for these songs are, with numerous sources showing different titles. This is what I feel are the correct track names. Also there is supposedly a shorter track duration variation of this soundtrack somewhere as well. I am unable to find it, but MusicBrainz has it listed here:
http://musicbrainz.org/release/3a78703a-ea20-469b-bf21-0d0a4302bb22.
I have a feeling that perhaps its just an incorrect listing with the PSX variation of the songs listed (the durations seem to match up roughly). This is the copy I have:

Descent II (Complete Modified Version) (1996)
Album Artist: Interplay
14 Tracks (MP3, 320 kbps, 44100 hz)

01 Base Return - Peter Rotter (03:34) (Additional Redbook audio from Interplay Website, 128 kbps)
02 Title - Brian Luzietti (00:39)
03 Crawl - Brian Luzietti (02:32)
04 Glut - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (01:54)
05 Gunner Down - Brian Luzietti (02:27)
06 Cold Reality - Brad Cross/Larry Peacock/Leslie Spitzer (03:00)
07 Ratzez - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (02:27)
08 Crush - Brian Luzietti (03:20)
09 The Well (Mark 2) - Mark Morgan (02:47)
10 Haunted (Instrumental Remix) - Type O Negative (02:44)
11 Are You Descent? - Ron Valdez (02:41)
12 Techno Industry - Johann Langlie (02:17)
13 Robot Jungle - Johann Langlie (02:49)
14 Final Mission - Peter Rotter (02:30) (Additional Redbook audio from Interplay Website, 128 kbps)

This is the original Descent II soundtrack album with a few minor adjustments for completion. Firstly, the Intro and Endgame cinematic audio was released on the Interplay website aeons ago as 128 kbps mp3's. I've tagged these onto the beginning and end of the original album. Track 09 was originally known as Untitled. The Redbook audio release on the Interplay website for this track was titled "Mark2." I've taken the level that it first appears on ingame "The Well" and tagged it as such. It's generally agreed upon that Mark Morgan did not title any of his tracks present in the D2 Soundtrack. I contacted him about the tracks and he says he doesn't remember if he ever titled them.

Request: I cannot for the life of me get my hands on a copy of the original Descent II CD, so if someone could upload an EAC rip of the FLAC files for me to incorporate, that would be fantastic. I've ordered 3 different copies of D2 off Amazon and all of them are the Infinite Abyss mix.

Descent II: Vertigo Series (1996)
Album Artist: Interplay
7 Tracks (FLAC)/(MP3, 320 kbps, 44100 hz)

01 Crush (Extended Remix) - Brian Luzietti (04:39)
02 Glut (Extended Remix) - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (02:12)
03 Haunted (Instrumental Re-Remix) - Type O Negative (04:57)
04 Transmode Containment 2112 (Mark 1) - Mark Morgan (03:41)
05 The Well (Extended Remix) (Mark 2) - Mark Morgan (03:54)
06 Pain - Larry Peacock (04:22)
07 Rusty - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (03:19)

The Vertigo Series album has had missing info filled in to the best of my ability. The last 4 tracks were originally unnamed and some were also missing artist info. From the redbook audio released on the Interplay website we can determine that Track 7 was called Rusty (also present in a longer mix on the Descent 1 PSX release), Track 6 was by Larry Peacock and known as Pain. Track 4 and 5 were named after the levels they first appear in, Track 4 pertaining to Transmode Containment 2112 (known as Mark 1 on the Interplay Website), and Track 5 is an extended remix to the Mark Morgan song present on the original D2 Soundtrack, therefore I named it after the level it was first played in for the base game. There is some disagreement to these unofficial titles for the songs present, I named them after the first level they appeared in while playing with the Vertigo CD in D2X Rebirth. If someone could confirm the order is the same in the Windows 95 or DOS release please let me know and I can update if there is an issue.

Descent II: The Infinite Abyss (1996)
Album Artist: Interplay
8 Tracks (FLAC)/(MP3, 320 kbps, 44100 hz)

01 Title - Brian Luzietti (00:46)
02 Cold Reality (Extended Remix) - Brad Cross/Larry Peacock/Leslie Spitzer (05:01)
03 Crawl (Extended Remix) - Brian Luzietti (03:42)
04 Gunner Down (Extended Remix) - Brian Luzietti (03:35)
05 Ratzez (Short Remix) - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (02:20)
06 Techno Industry (Extended Remix) - Johann Langlie (04:27)
07 Are You Descent? (Extended Remix) - Ron Valdez (03:41)
08 Robot Jungle (Extended Remix) - Johann Langlie (04:31)

This soundtrack is pretty much unmodified, I renamed track 05 Ratzez from "(Extended Remix)" to "(Short Remix)" because it is actually a shorter variation of song present on the original soundtrack.

01 Descent Playstation Intro - Mark Morgan (02:44)
02 Virtual Tension (PSX Mix) - Allister Brimble (04:49)
03 Hydraulic Pressurce (PSX Mix) - Allister Brimble (03:59)
04 Time for the Big Guns (PSX Mix) - Allister Brimble (04:04)

06 A Big Problem (PSX Mix) - Allister Brimble (03:58)
07 Primitive Rage (PSX Mix) - Allister Brimble (03:50)
08 Industrial Accident - Allister Brimble (04:24)
09 Haunted (PSX Mix) - Type O Negative (04:26)
10 Rusty (PSX Mix) - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (03:45)
11 Mystery Metal (PSX Mix) - Allister Brimble (04:19)
12 Robotic Menace (PSX Mix) - Allister Brimble (04:50)
13 Glut (PSX Mix) - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (04:51)
14 Ratzez (PSX Mix) - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (03:59)
15 Outerlimits - Allister Brimble (02:33)
16 Ether in the Air (PSX Mix) - Allister Brimble (04:49)
17 Descent Playstation Ending - Mark Morgan (01:44)

Ripped from the PSX .XA audio files and cinematic audio. These files were originally 37800 hz files, converted to 44100 hz for compatibility (no pitch change). I ripped them directly from the XA files on the disc and used both PSound and the plugin for Foobar to compare conversions and found no differences. http://www.allgame.com/game.php?id=2084&tab=credits has Mark Morgan credited for doing the cinematic audio for this release and I believe that is correct. Note that the files were reordered based on their ingame appearance. Thanks to Alieo aka Texace146, I used the track order present on his upload of the PSX soundtrack here.

Descent Maximum (PSX) (*The Descent II Playstation release) (1997)
Album Artist: Interplay
15 Tracks (FLAC)/(MP3, 320 kbps, 44100 hz)

01 Title - Brian Luzietti (00:39)
02 Glut (Extended Remix) - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (02:12)
03 Ratzez (Short Remix) - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (02:20)
04 Techno Industry - Johann Langlie (02:17)
05 Gunner Down - Brian Luzietti (02:27)
06 Are You Descent? - Ron Valdez (02:41)
07 Crawl (PSX Maximum Remix) - Brian Luzietti (02:40)
08 Haunted (Instrumental Remix) - Type O Negative (02:44)
09 The Well (Mark 2) - Mark Morgan (02:43)
10 Cold Reality - Brad Cross/Larry Peacock/Leslie Spitzer (03:00)
11 Robot Jungle (PSX Maximum Remix) - Johann Langlie (03:03)
12 Crush (PSX Maximum Remix) - Brian Luzietti (03:10)
13 Rusty (PSX Maximum Remix) - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (02:37)
14 Pain (PSX Maximum Remix) - Larry Peacock (03:18)
15 Transmode Containment 2012 (Mark 1) (PSX Maximum Remix) - Mark Morgan (03:20)

Ripped from the PSX .XA audio files. These files were originally 37800 hz files, converted to 44100 hz for compatibility (no pitch change). I ripped them directly from the XA files on the disc and used both PSound and the plugin for Foobar to compare conversions and found no differences. Most of the raw files were oddly 3:10 in length and had the last note looping periodically between silence for the unused remainder of the track. I've cut them to the length of the original D2/Infinite Abyss/Vertigo tracks where appropriate and made notes otherwise.

Noteworthy unique songs: Rusty and Pain are both significantly shorter duration remixes than found elsewhere.

Detailed extra analysis:
Title = Same as Descent II Soundtrack version
Glut = Same as Descent II - Vertigo Series version (minor fade differences)
Ratzez = Same as Descent II - The Infinite Abyss version (minor fade differences)
Techno Industry = Same as Descent II Soundtrack version (minor fade differences)
Gunner Down = Same as Descent II Soundtrack version (minor fade differences)
Are You Descent = Almost the same as Descent II Soundtrack version(off by like .5 seconds at the end)
* Crawl = 8 Seconds longer than the Descent II Soundtrack version, not sure where the extra time is coming, there might be an extra note or two repeating or the pitch could be slightly off but it sounds almost identical despite the difference.
Haunted = Almost the same as Descent II Soundtrack version (fade out at the end is slightly different)
The Well (Mark 2) = Almost the same as the Descent II Soundtrack version (fade out at the end is slightly faster)
Cold Reality = Same as Descent II Soundtrack (minor fade differences)
* Robot Jungle = New Mix - Much longer fadeout than Descent II Soundtrack version
* Crush = Cuts off 10 seconds earlier than the Descent II Soundtrack version
* Rusty = New Mix - shorter than Descent II Soundtrack version or Descent Playstation version
* Pain = New Mix - shorter than Descent II - Vertigo Series version
* Transmode Containment 2012 (Mark 1) = New Mix (Starts about 10 seconds into where the Vertigo track did)

This is a compilation of all the Descent III audio. A huge thanks to composer Tim Jones for releasing the lossless source audio files for us!!! Check out Tim's work at:
http://www.jonestimjones.com/

Track 7-11 are from the Descent 3 HOG file, I compiled the separated files into complete tracks and copied the repeating sections a few times in some of the tracks to give them a decent length, with fadeouts added at the end. D3 audio is stored in .osf files which are 16 bit 22050 files maximum quality as far as I know. I converted them to .wav and then FLAC/MP3 after that.
The rest of the tracks are a compilation of the AutoPilot releases of the tracks on his old mp3.com site, and the filler are mixes released by the community and available on Planet Descent. The track comment section lists whether the track was mixed by AutoPilot or another author (or blank if the release was unknown).

Track 29-33 are listed as bonus tracks. Track 29 is from the 5-level Demo release of Descent III that came bundled with the Voodoo 3 V3000 video card. Tracks 30-33 are ripped from the Interplay .mve movies via Game Audio Player. I'm not sure what kind of quality .mve files are but the audio is extracted to FLAC, and they sound really good too. Even though we have the source audio from Tim Jones for the cinematics, I figure I'd tag these on here as a bonus too.

A note on the credits, http://www.allgame.com/game.php?id=22504&tab=credits lists Julian Soule as the composer for the Intro cinematic, and the ending cinematic is a sound clip from the Descent 3 intro so is therefore by Tim Jones.

===============================================
What we are missing:

Descent 1 & 2 Midi Soundtracks: FLAC/MP3 OPL3 hardware recording, SC-55 Hardware recording of Vampyro, FLAC version of Descent II Title Remix by Dan Wentz, and possibly a full FLAC/MP3 Roland SC-88 recording.

Descent Playstation - Intro and ending cinematic music before game audio was mixed in (Done by Mark Morgan, he no longer has the files for them).

Descent II - Planetary Warp cutscene music & last world warp music before game audio was mixed in. We have the intro and ending. The Mac D1 soundtrack also features a variant of "Escape" from Descent II but the version used on Descent II PC is a bit different. Not sure if sources for this audio still exist.

Descent 3 - Intro full version. Tim Jones is going to search for a CD backup of the Intro track if he has the time. Autopilot MP3.com Limited Edition Descent 3 CD Soundtrack and Mercenary Soundtrack:

http://www.bysmitty.com/Soundtracks/Descent3merc/Descent3merc.htm

Descent 3 Mercenary - Descent III Mercenary Intro before the game sound was mixed in.

Descent Freespace 1 & 2 (Next up on the to-do list)

Just for completion's sake. You may want to include Dan Wentz's remakes of his music including a remix of his D2 opening theme and briefing music.

Available at his soundcloud profile

Also if you are indeed going to include Freespace 1 and 2 music, I'd look there as well as he appeared to have remade everything.

Dropped a line to Dan about his tracks. He might be able to get us some loseless midi recordings time permitting.

Looks like the Briefing music on his SoundCloud is the same midi just recorded with a Roland PMA-5 instead of a Roland SC-55. The PMA-5 is pretty similar but has a little newer instrumentation. I might just replace the SC-55 version with his, it sounds really good, but I'm not sure there's so much of a difference to warrant a separate track on there. Kaiaatzel over at PlanetDescent suggested I implement some of the OPL3 midi recordings into the soundtrack because of their differences, so I'm thinking about making another midi soundtrack release in OPL3.

Suggestion for the D2 original soundtrack: Try to get hold of "Descent 2: Destination Quartzon". That's a bundled demo-like version of Descent 2 consisting of the first 8 levels and it seems to include the same CD tracks as the full version.
I got it bundled with the Logitech Wingman Extreme joystick and could try to rip a FLAC version, if you like. I'm just not sure if/where I can upload it.

Can you add the music of the planets? I mean..when Pyro-GX appears after teleporting, it's playing a short music. Where can I find that? Or would you upolad it?

The only versions of those tracks that exist are the audio that's mixed in with the movie itself. It doesn't exist separately and it's not possible to separate it from the rest of the sounds in the movie (the music and the sound effects make use of the same sound channels).

The only thing that you could do is try to find the two guys who wrote the cinematic music for Descent 2 and ask them.
