a thought about Descent 2 ogg music

Postby Alter-Fox » Sun Jul 06, 2014 8:12 pm

I was wondering why the download was so big for the D2 tracks until I actually opened the zip file and saw the Redbook songs were all there as well as the midi songs, lol. Are you using the Interplay versions of the tracks or the higher-quality versions from ArtOfShred? That's not the point of this post... but it is a question-type thing I have curiosity about.

Anyway, the point of this post... the posting of the high-quality of the ogg tracks on the downloads page brought to mind how Dan Wentz made those awesome remixes of the Freespace soundtrack for FS Open, I wonder if he'd do the same with the Descent 2 midi songs for D2X-XL if we asked.

Your zip file?

Because I have uploaded D1 and D2 songs in HQ ogg format, too. But there are no extra files in those archives.

The soundtracks you uploaded to the downloads section are what I was talking about.

Hmm ... I only checked my local files. Maybe I uploaded the wrong ones and didn't notice, or forgot to fix that.

Thanks for the hint.

Edit:

I just downloaded the music archives from my web server. They do not contain subfolders with midi music and other stuff. Maybe you got an old version where I had accidentally left those folders in?

Nope they were all in the same folder.

The files were (all .ogg except the playlist, obviously)
01_intro_crawl
02_crush
03_mark2
04_coldreal
05_techno (misnamed like in the Interplay release :P)
06_glut
07_gunner
08_mark1
09_pain
10_robot (misnamed like in the Interplay release again)
11_ratzez
12_haunted
13_rudescnt
14_rusty
15_base_return
16_final_mission
briefing
credits
d2_01
d2_02
d2_03
d2_04
title
playlist.txt

01_intro_crawl -- 16_final_mission are the same files as the Interplay release of the D2 Redbook (128kbps quality, and with the names of the tracks Techno Industry and Robot Jungle switched for some reason). briefing -- title are the seven midi songs, recorded on what sounds like either an SB Live or that Creative Soundfont also on the downloads page - probably the latter (not a bad soundfont on the whole but the guitars are horrible). The Playlist.txt enumerates thirteen of the redbook songs, from 02_crush -- 14_rusty in order, and there's no playlist for the midi songs.

Anyway I might talk to Dan Wentz about doing the same thing for D2X-XL that he did for Freespace Open, if he has some spare time -- it seems he's pretty busy right now getting his new band together. :D

The files were all oggs except playlist.txt.
I'm pretty sure you did everything right but you misunderstood something I said to make you think otherwise :P.

Heh... speaking of Descent music I found out today that the midi song from D1 level 2 is actually a remix of the Playstation/Mac redbook track instead of the other way around -- Larry Peacock wrote the redbook track as some kind of marketing device and later remixed it into midi format to play in game. I don't think this applies to any other redbook tracks... but who knows.

You are right. I misunderstood you. You just referred to the contents of the archives, not the song file formats.
