Warp in effect

Postby Weyrman » Fri Aug 01, 2014 12:06 am

I know its a minor thing but could you make the warp in effect at the start of a level longer? I often seem to miss it as the screen is sorting itself out and its such a lovely effect. :)

Actually, with some simple sound editing and shield bubble effects I reckon you could get the Descent 2 "Warp Drive" effect in game.

Now THAT would be pretty!

I am currently getting hate flamed in a discussion thread of Steam's Descent area for D2X-XL being "regressive feature creep" and me being a "narcissist astro turfer", and you demand more features and prettiness?

:lolol:

j/k

I will see what I can do. I could even have D2X-XL switch to chase cam mode while you are spawning (all optional, ofc).

Btw, if you feel like giving that pompous troll some, you never heard me say "don't do it!". ;) Apart from that could D2X-XL need some positive feedback to balance all the crap Rebirth fanboys and/or D2X-XL/karx haters spread. Just sayin'.

I think I will call it the "Weyrman Effect".

That sounds sooo scientific!

I've been there, and left some words. ;)

And yeah, the "Weyrman Effect" would be pretty cool!! :D

Um... the whole point of "astroturfing" is that they're not supposed to know who you really are. If the creator says who he is before posting in support of his product, it's not astroturfing...

Well, although this is getting off-topic I will quote what I said at the discussion at Steam's forums as I consider it relevant.
Anyway, the feature Weyrman asked for is already implemented
(Sorry Weyrman for derailing your topic a bit. :comfort: ).

FROM STEAM:
karx11erx wrote:...Funny enough, many Rebirth fanboys here talked bad about D2X-XL, but no D2X-XL user who posted here talked bad about Rebirth...

And that's actually a true statement.

Of course it doesn't happens with all Rebirth fanboys, there are pretty nice ones that are good friends of mine and even if XL is not their cup of tea, they fully respect it; But it's completely true that most of the D2X-XL bashing comes from total Rebirth fanatics (and I emphazise 'fanatics', as they are more than followers).

Even Drakona that is makin' the Retro mod for Rebirth (and thus is a purist) doesn't bashes XL as much as other users around there.

I will quote this one more time:
karx11erx wrote:...But no D2X-XL user who posted here talked bad about Rebirth...

I'm one of those D2X-XL fanboys, as it's my favorite port without hesitation, and effectively, I respect Rebirth very much and I like it a lot, I will not bash it!
Heck, I even get along with Zico (Rebirth's developer) pretty well!

I use Rebirth on most of my older computers and also use it to play some old D2 vanilla missions from time to time nowadays, even if I TOTALLY PREFER XL, but as I'm not as BIASED as some Rebirth fanatics, I enjoy both ports and don't have a problem if one or the other decides to talk about updates or stuff here. :)

What's wrong about a small talk regarding a nice port that helps to keep our favorite game alive??!!?!?

So, if it's good to talk about Rebirth on this topic, why it's not good to talk abou XL as well?
Or there's too much bias infecting this thread? ;)

EDIT:
And about this:

AN UPSET wrote:..without pretentious tack-ons of unneccessary glitz that introduce instabilities high up on its todo list, and its helped by word of mouth from like-minded passionate Descent fans that enjoy Descent...

Some of those "pretentious tack-ons of unnecessary glitz" (why I always hear/read the infamous 'Unnecessary' word??!!?) were asked by me and other levels developers, because, guess what, it were totally NECESSARY for our projects!

If it were not for those NECESSARY features I asked for, my Single-Player mission mod that I'm working on heavily since years already and that I have a dream to see it done, wouldn't be possible AT ALL to make it along with all the story and scripting elements as I planned and dreamed for since ever!

(like i.e. the ability to reprogram and disarm robots on XL, the ability to change textures throught triggers, to teleport, to use semaphore scripting, to trigger stuff by destroying objects, the weather effects for the terrains, custom intro/extro movies, etc)

Thanks to all this NECESSARY and "Pretentious" stuff I can fullfill my dreams as Descent developer! :)

Oh yeah, I forgot one thing: if it doesn't serves for the somewhat boring (IMVHO) and 'passionate' Online Multiplayer aspect of the game, everything is 'unnecessary'. Let's screw all single-player players and developers (that are un-passionated as I see), we don't need them, booooh!

(I just discovered I'm an un-passionated Descent fan, OMG it all has been a delusion!!)....

END OF STEAM POST
________________

I don't tend to act like this and to get into arguments as I don't really like this kind of stuff, but all this "lots of unnecessary stuff nobody likes and wants" trend that D2X-XL attackers use so much really gets on my nerves.

Note I do respect and also enjoy Online Descent Multiplayer from time to time (specially Coop), and I fully respect all Multiplayer advocates, but really all these excesively Multiplayer-centric attitude has broke the community so much!!
Even Zico gets attacked for not being 'super-duper-perfect' while fixing competitive multiplayer stuff.

You don't hear Freespace 2 SCP getting all this flack for "unnecessary glitz." What nonsense! Without their hard work there would be no Diaspora, Wing Commander Saga, and Babylon Project! It's such fan projects and modding ability in-which communities are based around!

Back on Track :D

Just had a look a the new warp in effect. I would suggest that it would look better if the start camera position was in front of the ship looking back at it. When I started D2:level 2 my starting viewpoint was inside the hidden room behind the ship and I then zoomed through the closed door into the ship. Levels also start with the default view for a second and then switch to the camera view. Is that meant to happen or am I having "special" issues again?

I don't mean to sound ungrateful for your efforts, I do appreciate it, just thought I'd throw my 2c in.

... How did you have a look at it? Did Diedel update it already?

EDIT: So he has, but yes. I agree. Camera should be from front, not back.

Yeah, i've just checked out the 'weyrman effect' in action on 1.17.72 (with the new camera angle) and it's pretty cool!
I liked it a lot!
