If I buy Descent from Steam, D2X-XL will still work fine with that, right?

Postby Yokelassence » Mon Jul 08, 2019 6:03 am

Just checking. I saw there was a guide for installing D2X-XL on the Steam forums, so I'm assuming it will all work the same with the Steam version of D1 + D2. But before I buy the game I just thought I would ask

Also wow, haven't posted on this forum in years.

I got nostalgic for some D2X-XL again and booted my old PC (the one in my signature, haha this account is so ancient) ...only to find to my horror that my D2X-XL folder was missing. Not sure why. All my other old games are there. Damn, that's a lot of data lost. Thankfully my two major projects are still hosted on this website (The Sphere, and Dimensional Intersect. Thank you Karx for still keeping them hosted! :D). But damn...

My original Descent CD's are lost to the ages and with my D2X-XL folder missing that's why I'm considering getting fresh new data from Steam.

Hello Yoke! :hello:
Indeed, long time since the last time we saw you around here.

Theoretically it should work fine with either the GOG or Steam version, as long as you copy the PIG, S11, S22, HAM and HOG files from GOG/Steam folders to the Data folder of D2X-XL (and also Descent.cfg in the Config folder).

The forum is not as active as before, but thankfully I was browsing it just now.
Nice to see you again.

Hi Pumo! Nice to see you still around and Pumo mines still coming along. Thanks for the assurance

I guess I shouldn't worry if D2X-XL works with the Steam copy because it doesn't need to. D2X-XL should be pretty much standalone and only needs a few original game files. I'll try it out and see how it goes

So far so good.

I figured it wise not to mess with the Steam installation which already had the game setup to use Dosbox

So I extracted D2X-XL to its own directory, and followed the readme to create the required folders. I copied all the data from the steam installation over to the D2X-XL installation as per advised above. Found the Vertigo missions (someone on steam links it) and popped that in as well into the missions folder.

All the missions run as expected (D1, D2 and Vertigo) and D2X-XL seems to be playing nice. I remember setup used to be much more tedious and technical back in the days but it seems D2X-XL is much easier to setup than it used it be. Love the cool shockwave effects that's been added.

I only had one issue with the game doing a CTD after computing lightmaps. Lightmap computation takes a looooooong time. I don't think my video card likes it (GTX 1070). I toned lightmap settings down to basic to dodge this issue. I'll roll with that until further investigation

Otherwise I think we're good to go. I'll see if I can't get my old missions running

Also for some weird reason, Vertigo appears twice in the mission list?

It appears twice? that's pretty weird.

Check on file manager and do a search to see if d2x.hog and d2x.mn2 are on more than one location at a time on your D2X-XL installation folder.

Not that I can see. D2X.hog and D2X.mn2 are both in the missions folder where they belong. Not duplicated in the data folder or anything.

Selecting the extra Vertigo just opens up Vertigo normally. Guess it's not a big deal. There's other issues I'd like to report, like cockpit camera displays dislodged from the cockpit monitors. Is karx still active on sourceforge? Haven't said hi to him yet
