Sound squelching in 1.14.15, didn't have issue with 1.13

Postby Thraka » Wed Apr 15, 2009 3:02 am

I tried tweaking the settings around, but couldn't get it to go away. I really hear it when many sounds are playing. For example, if I jump into the lower left room from the start of D1 map 1 and all the bots fire at me at the same time, the sound dims so I can't hear it and is squelchy. Once those sounds stop, i can hear my lasers again but it's still squelchy.

I have this in config:
-sdl_mixer 1
-use_d1sounds 0
-hires_sound 2

I tried a few different things. hires_sound 0 fixed the issue, but I don't think it's going to use the hires sounds then. I also renamed sound2 to sound2temp and made a blank sound2 folder. I still had all the sounds. I'm unsure where it was getting them from.

Anyone else have an issue with sound since the upgrade?

That happens if you don't have correctly installed hi-res sounds.
Check that all hi-res sounds are correctly installed on 'SOUNDS2' folder (not 'SOUND2').

It is named "sounds2". Copy and pasted from explorer. In there, are all the wav files, no sub folders. They seem to be (tooltip from explorer, randomly checking many of them) at 1411kbps.

I get this in all the 1.14's, whether or not I'm using hires sounds, and the only thing I've been able to do to minimize the issue is turn the sound effects and music volume down to the lowest possible volume, then turn the main computer volume all the way up, and play with headphones (otherwise I can barely hear anything).

I still get it sometimes when I'm doing this (but usually only when there are several robots smashing into me. (i.e. Diamond Claws.)

What sound card do you have?
Do you have the latest drivers for it?

If yes. Then the next step is to post a bug report at SF.net.

How to get help fast?!

I'll check sound drivers, but I doubt they are the issue, but better safe than sorry ;)

Arctic, Try removing the sounds2 folder completely from the descent folder. Doing that seems to solve the issue for now.

I just downloaded 1.14.16 to see if it would fix the problem, it did not.

I'll get a bug filed.

Edit: sound card is onboard Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit driver date. 7/7/2005 (never had issue with it).
Edit2: The voice for the mine destruction says the line very fast. Like if you had a tape on fast forward and could hear the sounds from it.

Hi,
if this happen, your wavs may not have the right sample rate. Delete your sounds2 and sounds1 folder (if it is still present). Re-download the hires sounds for d2. Extract the sounds again (**yourdescentdirectory\sounds2**). I don´t know whether the switch
"-sound44k" is needed in d2x.ini any longer... set it anyway.

It is important too, that your sound card can handle >=64 sound channels. I own a XFi and I don´t have any problems with sound in d2x-xl.
Decrease the AI Aggressivity. There will be less simultaneous sounds.

K, I created a bug. I also retested with a straight downloaded, extracted, and run game with no config changes. It happened there too.

I couldn't find any sort of log file.

I don't know if this is related at all, but the option to sound a warning when shields are low keeps unchecking itself when I go back to root menu and go back into config.

Do you use the D1 hires sounds too ?
Do you use custom music ingame ?
Do you use the latest drivers for your sound card ?
What OS do you use ?

Maybe his hardware just cannot cope with too many sounds, although I believe that D2X-XL's audio channels are mere software channels (sound buffers).

When I get home, I'll double check everything and check for newer drivers. Does anyone have a copy of 1.13 I can download to compare? I swear it didn't happen in 1.13 on my machine. I play lots of other games and it doesn't happen there. I'm using WinXP, I have another machine that is Win7 (newer than beta) that I'll check too.

I was using custom music, but to rule out any of that, I downloaded a brand new copy from the website, extracted it, and ran the game, not changing a single thing.

Maybe my computer is just dieing :) Too much Left 4 Dead I guess. hehe.

Thraka, try unchecking the "Enable Mods" in the Misc. options. I get lots of sound problems with that enabled.

EDIT: If his computer can play Left 4 Dead, it should be able to play D2X-XL without many troubles, but it runs differently, so no guarantees.
