Fresh installation, can't play now.

Postby darkflamewolf » Sun Aug 30, 2009 2:27 pm

I did as you asked to solve my crashing problem, I deleted everything and did a fresh install of D1 and D2+Vertigo then installed your latest .109 version over everything. Problem is, the only directory structure within the RAR was a /bin directory. Everything else didn't get created. And I honestly can't remember much about all the various directories I needed to get the program working. So, for the moment I'm *GASP!* using Rebirth.

You should have backed up the folder before installing a fresh copy of D2.

http://www.descent2.de/install-frames.html

Anyways, you need to re d/l the data files. That will create some of the missing folders.

still says I can't run it due to improper application setup and here is what I got:

In main d2 directory I have:
d2x-xl.exe sdl.dll sdl_mixer.dll ogg.dll
vorbis.dll vorbisfile.dll smpeg.dll

In the config directory I have:
d2x.ini descent.cfg

In the data directory I have:
alien1.pig alien2.pig descent.pig fire.pig
groupa.pig ice.pig water.pig d2x-xl.hog
descent.hog descent2.hog descent2.ham hoard.ham
descent2.s11 descent2.s22
(no .p11 or p.22 anywhere to be found, same with banlist.txt)

In the movies directory I have:
d2x-h.mvl d2x-l.mvl
other-h.mvl other-l.mvl robots-h.mvl robots-l.mvl

What the heck am I missing?

The extra data files D2X-XL needs are now in an extra rar file (currently d2x-xl-data-1.4.95.rar). See the d2x-xl downloads page.

X2

She seems to be over looking my suggestion in regards to the "data" files I said for her to d/l.

I'm sorry I wasn't specific enough.... :P

Wolfie,

you don't have all DLLs from the d2x-xl windows rar file, and do you have a missions folder?

What exactly is the error message?

I actually downloaded those data files from this link:
http://www.descent2.de/downloads/d2x-xl ... .14.95.rar

So yes I did follow your advice and yes it DID recreate those data structure trees.
And then after I downloaded and installed that, I downloaded .111 and followed the directions to move the data where it should go, configs where those should go, etc. And still no dice.
All the files I got were from those two rar files, if they are not in there, where else would they be?
And yes I have a missions folder, had to create one myself.

Classic case of folder structure confusion?

If the error message reads "invalid system configuration" or something along the lines it usually means missing DLL files.

I have all these in my main Descent2 directory, you probably should too:

d2x-trackir.dll
d2x-xl-w32-omp.embed.manifest
HMIDET.386
HMIDRV.386
HMIMDRV.386
IFORCE.DLL
Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest
msvcm90.dll
msvcp90.dll
msvcr90.dll
ogg.dll
SDL.dll
SDL_image.dll
SDL_image-win16.dll
SDL_mixer.dll
SDL_mixer-win16.dll
SDL-win16.dll
smpeg.dll
vorbis.dll
vorbisfile.dll

You don't need the -win16, HMI*.* and iforce.dll files.

the only one I don't have is:
d2x-xl-w32-omp.embed.manifest
not sure why if it was supposed to be included in the rars I downloaded.

We should get a D2x-xl self-installer again. That thing was nice.

You don't need the *-omp.manifest anyway.

I have no idea why D2X-XL refuses to work for you. Did you try any of the other versions (from the bin foler)? Make sure to start them via a shortvut that adds -usidir <d2x-xl main folder> to the program call (e.g. -userdir c:\games\d2x-xl).

I don't understand what the deal is either.

I'll try a fresh install and see what the deal is.

I will try to create a full blown setup program for Windows. Visual Studio supports such a thing and it shouldn't be hard to make.

that'd be cool and it'd be easy to update each time. All you'd need to do is use the program to rebuild the installer with the updated files and that's about it. Its initially setting it up that'd take the longest, updating it each time won't take long at all.
