Never gotten D2 XL to work..

Postby Space » Sat Sep 05, 2009 1:06 am

Now I'm trying to make a real effort to get it to work.

I followed http://descent2.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11 (Second updated post) to the letter, and it doesn't work.

when I try to run it, it first issues a warning that I can't play Descent 1 levels, then it goes straight to not responding.

I don't see any missing files when I compare to the screenshots, though I do seem to have a few more files.

Help would be appreciated.

"It does not work" could be anything.

Describe exactly what the game does, what does it tell you/show you? And what action(s) you made that triggered the problem?

It may also help if you post your system hardware/operating system, the contents of game log and maybe a screen shot of what is happening.

Because the game does not need Descent 1 to run, it was just telling you that a feature was not available. I couldn't say for sure if that is the cause of the problem.

D2x works fine even if the files needed to play D1 levels are missing.

Can you also tell us which version number you are using. Which file did you download?

Irontower said that D2X-XL doesn't work if there are plr files in its main folder. I will test that.

What OS are you using? Vista/7 32 or 64bit?
Does the installation from the CD work?
Install the 1.14.120 and then rightclick the d2x-xl.exe and choose "run as administrator".
Does this give the same error message?

That's the .119 version that stopped to work. It doesn't even display a program window though if it stumbles over plr files in the D2X-XL main folder. Maybe a regular crash.

32 bit

Actually I just retested it a few times.
It runs the movies, title screen, robot briefing, then it crashes before the level starts.
I tried reinstalling it, and running it in backwards compatibility mode, did the same thing.
I tried both medium and large installations, and even tried starting the program with my screen resolution turned way down.

my last idea are the hires sounds, did you install them?
If not edit the d2x.ini and set the switch to 0 "-hires_sound 0", try it.
You can download the complete hires sounds here http://www.descent2.de/downloads/hires-sounds-D2.rar
try also the switch "-nostalgia"
set the graficcard to default settings (and use latest drivers), try disable triple buffering for openGL.
On my daughters pc I have had problems with 3Dgames - the problem was that the Windows Experience Index
was not set. After running it the problems was gone !? Look if it is actual - controlpanel-system.
What graficcard did you have?

Usually D2X-XL crashes when the graphics hardware is insufficient or an outdated driver is used.

I have to say that it somehow irks me that you come with a message as detailled and meaningful as "d2x-xl crashes" but do not give any details about your OS, hardware, driver version, d2x-xl installation details and apparently also haven't read this thread, or you'd probably had provided a d2x.log file already.

You may call me unfriendly now, but actually I think it is not exactly a sign of politeness to keep several people busy with trying to help without you even bothering to look around this forum for hints and instructions and doing as much as possible to help us to help you.

I actually did read that post, but I dont have a d2x.log file (Or I just cant find it, when I organize files by name I don't see it at least.) and an empty savegames folder.

--
I have windows vista 32 bit, ask if you need anymore on that. I have a geforce 7600 I'll check the driver version in a moment.
What do you mean d2x-xl installation details exactly? I installed descent 2 on CRAZY, it worked (but it played in highspeed mode), I extracted the data files, moved the appropriate files into the folders they were supposed to go into, and extracted the d2x-xl .120 version. I also copied d2x-default.ini and made it d2x.ini.

(a little later)
I actually just updated my geforce 7600 drivers (to 190.62) and it works, so you were correct. However there were a few other things (Like changing the d2x-defaultini to d2x.ini)
I guess if I had given all those details at the beginning it would have been a two reply topic, sorry for being a noob. :? Thank you all who tried to help, anyway.

A search in the forum may have lead you to this thread.

Updating video drivers and D2X-XL regularly will insure stable play.

In the above link, I was unaware of a new Nvidia drivers. However, due to past experiences with sort of thing. Video drivers are usually the culprits in crashes.

D2X-XL has its own data files which need to be installed on top of the regular Descent 2 installation.

To make D2X-XL print a log file, create a desktop shortcut for it, edit the shortcut (right click -> properties) and eppend " -printlog" to the line containing the program call.
