New Installation tested

Postby Irontower » Sat Sep 05, 2009 7:33 am

I tested myself a new installation of Descent under Windows Xp sp3.

What I have to do that it works:

1) installing Descent 2 v1.2 from the CD ( crazy install needed!!! ), create pilot irontowr, start the W95 version to see it is working
on x64 systems get Winrar or 7-zip and you can extract the files from the CD/Descent2.sow file.

2) copying from the Vertigo-CD from the Vertigo folder the complete files and mission folder to the main Descent 2 folder and overwrite all existing files

3) installing D2X-XL v1.14.119

now trying to start but nothing happens, the d2x-xl.exe hangs in memory, end it with taskmanager.
I found out that d2x-xl copy all files correct but didn't delete them in the main folder.
I have to delete the irontowr.plr here and then it works (got the missing D1 message)! You can also delete the other *.ham *.pig *.mvl etc. files in the main folder.
To get clear sound I must set the volume control of midi in my soundcard mixer to 2 !?

EDIT - 7 Sep 2009:

tested today with 1.14.120 - working out of the box :D
the midi volume is set to 0 so put the slider in the sound menu one point to the right and you get clear sound.
Hires sound and textures are optional but highly recommanded. Be careful with the settings,
for all eyecandy a powerfull machine is required.

Please - UPDATE all your drivers to the latest one, this will save needless errors!
test your system with Furmark to see if OpenGL is working properly

Hope this helps

Yeah, same for me. The game processes are still around though.

D2X-XL apparently looks for plr files somewhere in its codes and draws wrong conclusions about installation folders from its existance, or so. The curse of forgotten legacy code.

Sheesh.

Finding a plr or plx file in the main folder makes D2X-XL loop endlessly while trying to copy it to the profiles folder. Fixed already, just need to compile and make a new package.
