Very Low FPS in D2X-XL 1.15.248

Postby GuideBot17 » Thu Aug 04, 2011 2:12 am

Hey, I know this sounds redundant but I have the infamous Low FPS Problem. I'm using D2X-XL Version 1.15.248.

Here are some screenshots of the in-game settings I used for D2X-XL:

http://imageshack.us/g/64/d2xxl2011080320554595.png/

Here is a screenshot of my low FPS in D2X-XL:

http://imageshack.us/f/198/d2xxl2011080321000544.png/

I tried running D2X-XL with the "-pured2" switch in the D2X.INI File and my FPS returned to normal. Here is a screenshot of that:

http://imageshack.us/f/17/d2xxl2011080321312549.png/

These are my PC Specs:

OS: WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION

CPU: INTEL CELERON 2.80 GHZ

MEMORY: 2 GB RAM

GFX CARD: PNY NVIDIA GEFORCE FX 5200 PCI

DIRECTX VERSION: 9.0C

I have tried messing around with my graphics card settings. The driver version I'm using is 175.19, which is the latest driver my graphics card will support using Windows XP. Here is a screenshot of my graphics card settings:

http://imageshack.us/f/813/nvidiasetts.png/

I used a web installer to install the latest DirectX version. I can't use DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 because I'm using Windows XP.

I have already tried messing around with the switches in d2x-default.ini, but nothing seemed to correct the problem except for "-pured2". I have replaced the INI and I'm willing to try changing things around again. Here are the current switch settings I'm using in my INI File:

;keep mouse focus in game window
-grabmouse
;skip CD ROM check
-cdrom D:

Sorry if I'm being a pain in the ass to the developer, but if I could have some older versions of D2X-XL (such as the latest 1.14 version) that would be great. That way I can see if I can play D2X-XL at a playable FPS with default settings and identify what changes to D2X-XL caused the problem. I'll test every version until I find where the problem first started, I promise not to give the older versions to anyone else.

Hopefully, I have given enough information so we can identify what is wrong.

I'd wager it's your system specs in combination with something in D2X-XL that should be disabled for better performance but is hidden somewhere. Not sure what though.

I don't think karx11erx keeps old copies of the game lying around, but there are some people that do.

I agree - if -pured2 is giving you a good framerate it's not something wrong with the rendering engine, it's something that's not turned off in standard D2X-XL that your graphics card/RAM can't deal with.

Hi,

Lighting: Move the slider one step to the right
-On some weaker systems better lighting gives better performance-

Reduce sound channels a bit
enable V-sync via driver
and set V-sync to "always off" (nvidia settings)

set model quality to 2 (or even lower)
check whether the hires-sounds (extra download on descent2.de) are all installed.
-missing sound files could cause low fps-

run the game in fullscreen mode (remove the ";" in front of the command "-fullscreen" in your d2x.ini or d2x-default.ini).

You own a PCI graphics card. Those cards are slow. If the hints above won´t help, disable hires-textures and hires models (set a ";" in front of the commands in d2x.ini or d2x-default.ini).

I tried D2X-XL using all the settings as you described (except for lowering the sound channels, because every time I went to set it to medium or low, I would check the sound settings again only to find that they were set back to high). Unfortunately, changing all of those settings did not solve the low FPS problem.

Here is another screenshot of the problem:

I did try to figure out an additional switch I could add to my d2x-default.ini. I just don't know what that switch might be. I don't think it's a switch that's on the switches page.

I can run my monitor without using a graphics card. I'll try running D2X-XL with integrated graphics to see if it's something with my graphics card that is causing the problem.

Ok, I think we are getting somewhere. I just tried running D2X-XL using integrated graphics instead of my PCI Graphics Card and my FPS returned to normal.

Here is a screenshot of my in-game FPS using integrated graphics:

There seems to be a compatibility issue with a feature of the default renderer of D2X-XL 1.15.248 and my NVIDIA GEFORCE FX 5200 PCI graphics card which is causing very low FPS in-game.

So far, I have only found 2 ways to fix this problem:

Running D2X-XL 1.15.248 with the "-pured2" switch in the "d2x-default.ini" file:

http://imageshack.us/f/17/d2xxl2011080321312549.png/

Running D2X-XL 1.15.248 using integrated graphics instead of my PCI Graphics Card:

http://imageshack.us/f/405/d2xxl2011080409220989.png/

There should be some other ways to fix the low FPS problem, but I don't know exactly how. It should involve these things:

A. Enabling or disabling a feature in D2X-XL's renderer.

B. Enabling or disabling a feature in my NVIDIA graphics card settings.

C. Updating my NVIDIA graphics card drivers.

Let me give you some more information about my graphics card again.

Here is a screenshot of the settings I have used for my GFX card in the NVIDIA control panel:

http://imageshack.us/f/813/nvidiasetts.png/

If there is anything I can change in my graphics card settings that will fix the problem, I don't know what setting I need to change. I do not know if there are any more advanced settings I can mess around with, other than the ones in the NVIDIA control panel.

I'm using GeForce Release 175 version 175.19, which contains the latest drivers my graphics card will support under Windows XP 32-bit.

I have a very bad performing 2D graphics card. If there is any feature of the D2X-XL renderer that is utilizing 2D graphics in-game, this could result in very low FPS.

Hi,

I wonder why you wanna use your PCI graphics card (which offers poor performance) while you have the chance to play the game with your onboard graphics chip (which has a much higher and needed bandwidth) ?

It is useless to optimize d2x-xl for PCI graphics boards, because 99,99 % of the users own at least an AGP board, imho.

My PC wasn't really made for games and unfortunately it doesn't have an AGP 4x/8x slot. I only have an AGP 2x slot, which won't get me very far. I'd have to get a brand new computer, or a different PCI card which will bottleneck my CPU.

I guess I could use integrated graphics and remove my PCI graphics card for extra bandwidth, but I have other games that I like to use with my graphics card.

I'd still like to figure out what exactly is causing D2X-XL not to like my graphics card. There have also been others who have had the same issue on the forums and have had the same graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200). Is it because Geforce FX 5200 has got really bad 2D peformance? Is it a NVIDIA GeForce driver issue with D2X-XL? Is it something that can be fixed if a feature was added to disable something in D2X-XL's ini or in-game settings?

Yeah, that is a really low end gfx card, and only having a PCI interface doesn't exactly help, too.

It is a little weird that integrated graphics would be faster, on the other hand - it probably should be on new PCs, but not so much at the time. If they were faster across the board the manufacturer might as well not have bothered with the graphics card at all.

2D could have something to do with it, theoretically - but it could wind up being pretty hard to track down, and the question is whether it'd be worth it considering you have a couple of workarounds (even they're a bit annoying), and, well, optimizing for an FX 5200...

Well, I do have a GeForce 6200 PCI card, and although is not great, I got decent framerates with several of D2X-XL effects enabled. (up to 70fps, down to 20~ ocasionally) but it's pretty playable.

So it's not just an issue with PCI cards, but maybe specifically with the FX 5200?
