I would assume just as low as possible on all sliders.

Have you tried the -pured2 switch in the config file?

It changes everything in-game too.

pureD2 does not just change the menus.

If you find bugs in pureD2 mode please report them.

I doubt that pureD2 lighting is darker than Rebirth because it uses the exact lighting method vanilla Descent does.

I have already explained which settings to adjust how to achieve a "retro look" effect just via the in-game options, and I think it was you who I had explained that here.

Few people have ever used pureD2 mode - they rather stuck with vanilla Descent on ancient hardware dedicated to that purpose, or with Rebirth, so it may not be as well tested as other parts of XL. If you want to help with improving in this area, please be constructive and post bug reports about any issues there. In case of "cannot store a savegame" I need to know where you started off (like "I went from level X to secret level Y"). In any case I need your d2x.ini and player profile (*.plr, *.plx) zipped up in an archive (zip/rar/7z) together with the ticket (preferrably with every ticket, since I usually don't keep user data and if there are several tickets I don't want to search through them for the one holding such data).

Not many people come to XL looking for the "retro look" in Descent. XL adding and improving on the original Descent, but not changing it. That said, as Diedel explained, not many people have tested what you're trying to do.

You can get close to the old look, but it doesn't even use the same graphics engine, so you'll never get it perfect.

Mmm.

I know for certain that D2X-XL's lighting under basic or -pured2 is significantly darker than D2 DOS or D2X-Rebirth if the brightness setting is at "standard". I turn it up one notch and it's best comparable to D2 DOS, but a bit darker. I turn it up another notch and it's best comparable to D2X-Rebirth, but maybe a bit brighter.
Some people are like Slinkies. They aren't really good or even useful for anything but they always manage to put a little smile on your face when you give them enough of a push down the stairs.
