D2X-XL installation problems

Postby renas2 » Wed Nov 07, 2012 6:26 pm

Hi,
This is my first post.

I did a test to install d2x-xl yesterday and it mainly worked. Just a few verifications.

Does the download file D2X-XL addon Data archive still usefull?

I did not find the -renderpath line in d2x default.ini for the hires models activation. It was late, maybe I missed it but I did use the search option. By the way, I created a d2x.ini in the same folder as the default.ini.

Years ago, I installed D2x-xl on an overclocked to 3Ghz dual core Intel E2160 with a 7600 NVIDIA card I think. It was on a CRT at 1280X1024 if I remember well. It had slowdowns and did crash. Both core of the CPU where at 100% the whole time.
Now I have a 1055t 6 cores but a 8400GS Nvidia at 1680X1050 and the 6 CPU are at around 20% but it is slower and it did crash. Probably the graphic card and resolution. Can you confirm? I plan to buy an AMD video card unless you tell me otherwise.

The starting .exe for multi cores did not work. A message claims that I should reinstall. The regular ,exe worked and I wonder if I loose some power. The 1055T is not that good for games and some programs. I use XP for now but I will switch to a Windows 8 with a regular start menu soon.

Thanks a lot,

Hi,
I did first an install with only the hi-res files. I now have reinstalled everything with the medium res files (as suggested in the first post) and then added the hi-res files. The size is about 80Meg more than with the hi res files only install. But now it seems that only one core is fully used. Maybe I misread yesterday. The multithreaded switch put to 6 did not change anything.
If someone is using a 4 core intel CPU and the 4 cores work I will appreciate an indication.
Thanks,

Did you try putting -multithreading to 4? The number you pass it tells it how many cores to use. If you have 4 cores, you shouldn't be using 6. Also, I believe you have to use the OMP version of D2X-XL for multithreading to work, but it's been a while.

Hi,
I put the multithreaded value to 6 because I have 6 cores on the AMD 1055T. The OMP .exe does not work and give me an error message. I think the multi-cores functions in the AMD 1055T is not as well implemented than the Intels. I could try to put 4 as the value, a more "normal" one.
On the 1055t with 1280X800 as resolution the frames go to 120 (good) to 8 or 5 (pauses) when there is an explosion. I lowered a lot of the settings.
I put the 2.27gb file on a PC with a 4000+ CPU and Windows 8 and stilll the OMP .exe refused to work. Could be a lot of things: the Windows 8, the PCI card for video.
Thanks anyway,

Use "1" to make D2X-XL use all available cores (up to 8). I am running D2X-XL on a 4 core AMD cpu and it run w/o a hitch there.

Hi,
I did put the value to 1 in the multicore switch. Not much change. Mainly one core is used but not to the max.
At 1280X800 the frames go to 120 when moving to 5 or 8 when there is a close range explosion in front of me taking a big part of the screen. The classic descent 2 demo is full of close range explosions and it slowdown and crash midway. Maybe you know if the CPU or video card handles the explosions light and/or the smoke effects. An Intel 4 cores or 2 cores seems to be a better choice.

In windows 8 on a second machine, D2x-xl starts but I have resolutions problems and no game now. It did work for a while if I remember well.

Thanks,

You are using the omp version of D2X-XL, don't you?

On the 6 cores 1055t with Nvidia 8400gs on XP and the 4000+ AMD whith the NVIDIA card running Windows 8 the omp.exe does not work. I am looking for another PC.
Thanks,

What does "does not work" mean? Does it just crash? Does it print an error message?

The omp.exe when clicked in XP SP3 give an error message suggesting a reinstalaltion. There is a mention of a bad side by side configuration in Windows 8 in the error message-I translated it from french. No starting in both.

Did you install the current VC8 runtime environment (see the FAQ)?

Hi,
Thanks for the tip! Now with VC8 and the multicore value still at 1 the omp.exe works. When I am at 1680X1050 I get 84 frames/sec. at rest and 4-5 when there is explosions. At 1280X800 I get 120 frames at rest and 5-8 at explosions. When stopping the game, all 6 cores have some peaks in the XP computer manager, but no steady line pass 50%.
So I suspect using 6 as a multicore value or more probably changing the weak 8400 GS videocard is the option. I suspect the smoke and light processes. If someone knows, are they handled mainly by the graphic card or the CPU?
I have 3gb DDR2 at 1066 or 1033 on this machine and no overclock. The memory meter in process manager seems to have room. The motherboard can boost single or many CPUs, but I do not think in this case it sees it as necessary.
Thanks a lot,
Renas2.

They are handled by both, but looking at your CPU and gfx hardware, the graphics card might be the problem.
