Sound effects stopped working

Yes I have Hi-res Sound to 0 in the config file. In the menu, I can alter music and sound fx freely and HEAR the changes. But once I start up a level or game, its silence. But if I exit out to the menu again, I get my sound back. What is going on?

Install the hires sounds and set hires_sound to 1.

Finally got back around to this, did what you said, installed the hi-res sounds and configured the ini file for hi-res sounds -> 1. And still same problem. I can adjust the music/sound sliders and HEAR differences in volume. But once the actual game starts...silence. Urgh!

Have you put "-midifix 1" in your d2x.ini?

Just checked the config file. its always been like that it seems. So yes, that line IS in the config file. Still no dice.

Okay, I found the wierdest of solutions/workarounds: Apparently, EVERY time I start a new level, reload a new game save, or just about any time I leave the current level for another, I have to go into the sound and music option menu and enable CD music without CD in the drive, it'll tell me that it can't enable Redbook audio, but all sound will come back, music FX, everything. But I have to do this each time I want sound. Kind of annoying, but I guess beggers can't be choosers, right?

But now I have a different problem, I want to record videos but I can't get it into windowed mode. I've tried putting -window in the command line when first booting up the program....nothing. I tried edited the config file for fullscreen 0. Nothing. It still boots up fullscreen...puzzling.

Have you tried Alt+Enter after launching the game?

It's important that there is only 1 ini file in your d2x folders. That and it's looking for the default ini file.

Correct, and that is all that is there. Only one.

Ok, so you have rebirth and xl installed in different folders?

Ditto that. In separate folders. Still no sound except for the weird workaround I mentioned above. But just tonight, even that stopped working now.

IDK what to tell you DFW.
Just that you seem to have a very weird setup.....

Edit: what about trying the default player profile? Don't change anything at first. Just check to see if you get the desired sound. Then change where needed.

DFW, is it still that laptop that you are running XL on? If so, has anything changed since then? (format?) If not, what would be key is how old your XL installation is. When EVERYTHING fails, you can always clean-install the game. If that fails too and you insist on playing the game, then you must clean-install something biggger, like an OS for example. :P OK just kidding, but in case you haven't tried, throw a clean install of the game somewhere else in your PC without touching the old config, and try it with all things new, even pilot, and untouched ini file. From there start making the necessary tweaks as posted here, but also with the help of the installation guide here: http://www.descent2.de/install-frames.html
