[Win8 and c++ runtime] I can't get D2X-Xl to run.

Postby GigaDave » Sat Oct 04, 2014 8:29 pm

Hello,

Today I installed D2X-XL (d2x-xl-win-1.17.83) and the c++ runtime components (vcredist_x86.exe from the link in the installation guide) on my win 8.1 system. However, as soon as I try to start D2X-XL, it gives me the message that "msvcr100.dll" cannot be found on my system. The runtime components show up in the 'programs and features'-list, I used an administrator account to install them.

I searched for a 'msvcr100.dll' file on my system, but all it returned was a 'msvcr100_clr0400.dll'-file in my 'winxsx'-folder.

I have also tried running the x64 version of D2X-XL with the x64 version of the 2008 c++ runtime components installed, but the same error appears. As a last resort I tested both the vs2013 x86 and x64 c++ runtime components, because I thought using the latest versions could help, but they didn't.

Are there any people who got D2X-XL running on a win 8(.1) system?
Any suggestions on what to do?

My system: HP xw4600 workstation, Intel quad core @ 2.66 GHz, 8 GB ram, Nvidia Quadro FX1700 (512Mb) with Win 8.1.

Why didn't you install 1.17.86? That's the latest Windows version.

I will add the file to the next program release (will be published today).

The first thing I do in a situation like that is a google search for the DLL it says is missing, if I can find a site that looks trustworthy I download it and put it in the program folder, and see if the program runs. Then I do an antivirus scan to make sure it was safe. :P

As far as I can tell with Windows 8 Microsoft stopped supporting OpenGL with their "default" graphics drivers. So you might also want to make sure you're using the latest drivers for your card from Nvidia if you haven't done that already.

I think msvcr100 is from VC++ 2010, actually... but the new XL version should fix that anyway.

These DLLs are in the 1.17.87 release, which is online now.

Well, at the time 1.17.83 was the latest version. I had also tried a 1.17.73? version and after two non-working versions I decided to ask for help here. After all, it looked like the issue was not with D2X-XL, but with the runtime components, so I looked into them first.

Thank you for your quick response. I have downloaded it and will test it this week. I will let you know how things went.

Re: [Win8 and c++ runtime] I can't get D2X-Xl to run. SOLVED

I have got it running now :D . The solution was not the new D2X-XL release (1.17.87), but the installation of the 2010 runtime components.

The rundown:
After installing the 1.17.87 release, I first ran D2X-XL x86 version and the earlier mentioned error did not show up. Instead I got an '0xc000007b'-error. Then I started D2X-XL x64 version and this also gave me new error: a missing "vcomp100.dll'-file. For the '0xc000007b'-error there are a lot of solutions posted on various forums, but for the missing "vcomp100.dll'-file there is only one: install c++ 2010 runtime components.

So I removed all the installed c++ runtimes (2008 and 2013 both x86 and x64), had my system checked (windows system file checker: sfc / scan), installed both x86 and x64 2010 c++ runtime components and fired D2X-XL x86 up. And it ran (I got the missing files message and after some file copying I could play).

I have just one related question. In order to run the x64 version, should I copy the files from the \64 folder to the main folder?
When I click the x64 version, it gives me the missing files list (when I click the x86 version, I can play).

You need to run the x64 version from a shortcut with a path reference. There are instructions on the site somewhere.

I will check again when I get home from work and post what I have if no one else answers this in the meantime.

I've been able to run the x64 version by copying the contents of the x64 folder into the main folder and overwriting the same files there.

The latest release package contains the required 2010 runtime DLLs.

You need to create a desktop shortcut in for the game. For the x64 version, add the command line parameter -datadir <datafolder>, where <datafolder> points to the main D2X-XL folder.

MSVC runtimes from different versions (VS 08/10/13 etc) should be able to co-exist - they don't use the same filenames. Typically an application will only use one particular version, but there's no guarantee that all the applications on your system will use the same one - so uninstalling the redistributable components for 2008 and 2013 may end up breaking other programs (unless they have copies in the program's folder... which hopefully they do).
