Was trying to get a local lan game going between 2 win7 boxes. I'm obviously doing something wrong.

To serve a game, i select udp/ip , type in this server (win7) ip address, and pick a random number for a port lik 15000.

To join the game, i use the ip from the above box, but now i have 2 port entries to make: server port, client port. so i'm clueless what to do here. tried 15,000 in both, no joy. tried using zero but get the error invalid ip.

i'm very confused. can someone please compose a lan game proceedure for dummies like me? tia.

couldn't we just go back to using ipx...that was much easier. :)

In a LAN, enter the same server port number on each client, but assign a different port number to each client.

Server: 15000
Client 1: Server=15000, Client=15001
Client 2: Server=15000, Client=15002
...

You get the picture. ;)

edit: thanks, it works. i'm leaving this original reply for your amusement!

I actually tried that configuration, and again just now. the server shows choose players menu, and the client "net game" are all blank. the firewall is down on both machines, and ping is successful.

If i can't LAN game descent, we're going to have to take up drugs instead...and they are such a let down compared to descent!

I haven't got off my butt yet to try other machines here in the basement that still run, but these two have the horsepower that makes d2xxl shine.

oops...wait a minute for a completely moronic mistake on my part....

seems i took a shortcut while learning the current ip of my server by pinging the wrong machine. wrong machine, wrong ip. go figure?
