Trouble installing Descent II

Postby Hikari » Thu Jun 12, 2008 3:21 pm

I found this site the other day and it got me wanting to fire up descent once again, however, I can't even install the game.
I started with my Descent II disk from 'The Definitive Collection' and the install shield crashes instantly upon the startup reaching 100%.

My disks are old and a bit scratched, so I found an iso of the disk, mounted it, and got the same problem. The first time I tried to install it I got an error about some windows 16-bit subsystem needing to close, and after that when I hit the install button in the autorun, absolutely nothing would happen until I restarted. Now I just get the pictured error, and can't recreate the subsystem thing. I'm running XP Home.

I searched the forums and couldn't find any topics quite related to this. Any ideas?

A compatability issue was the first thing that came to my mind here.

Have you tried setting the install program to win95 compatability mode?

Click on the setup executable icon (on your D2 CD) with right mouse button and select Properties...
There you should see a tab that says 'Compatiblity'. Click on it and select the execute program with compatibility mode checkbox, and lastly select Windows 95
from the list. Click on accept and check if it works ;)

I have had that problem too. I did the compatibility deal and it ran. Some games that are for Win95/98 u have to do that compatibility deal, actually most of them.
