Notebook/ Laptop + low end GFX = bad compatibility.

Though that doesn't mean that D2X-XL won't work any or all LP/NB.

Anyways.
Only time I would ever try again using a laptop would be if it were a high end Laptop.
Something like this.

Example:
2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Dual NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT
2GB 667MHz DDR2 Memory

.... but thats just me.

Anyways, goto Dell's website and download the newest video driver set there is.
Then try D2X-XL again.

Each time you attempt to run D2X-XL it makes a log file (called d2x.log). That can reveal what D2X-XL managed to do while trying to start up and thus can reveal things to turn on/off thus possibly enabling you to run D2X-XL.

Also, check out the D2x.ini file. Inside it are many items that you can turn on/off. Get the right set of combinations and you can probably run D2X-XL on that computer. You may not have all the features and abilities ... but heck, if it works, you then get to enjoy Descent. 8)

I have a couple 1.8ghz computers with low end video that (I think) are lower end than yours ... and I manage to run D2X-XL on them. Tho I do prefer to run D2X-XL on my "nicer" system.
Life is short and only happens once. So make it a good one.

It only creates d2x.log if you run it using the -printlog switch. I have also written enough here to make it clear that qualified support from myself is only to be expected when going via Sourceforge.net's support tracker.
