Pumo Mines Story Considerations

Postby Alter-Fox » Thu Jun 02, 2011 3:34 pm

I just thought of a couple of things story-wise... it's probably not possible to do anything about them but if something could be done it might make the gameplay a lot more believable.

First about the 'multiple pilots' aspect:
So now I'm pretty sure each pilot will use their own ship, and by the handling it will be easier for the player to tell who they're playing as at the moment. And, if done well I suspect the placement of whoever uses the light ship will allow you some control over when the player gets to use the (absolutely awesomely ulta-powerful) core cannon, which could prevent the game from becoming too easy.

One concern I have though is the carrying over of weapons from level to level. Does it make sense to carry the weapons between pilots?
Here are my thoughts on it:
If, in the story timeline, the missions take place one after the other, then it could be handwaved by saying that the weapons are transferred from one pilot's ship to the other's in order to give the next pilot more power.

That doesn't work, though, if, according to the story, the two levels are taking place at the same time, and the player is simply playing as the two pilots one after the other. (I have no idea if this will happen or not during the story).
So this raises the question: how did the second pilot get weapons from the first pilot that, according to the story, the first pilot didn't even pick up yet?
Explanation: the second pilot, at the beginning of the second level, has the weapons that the first pilot got at the end of the first level. But, according to the story, the first level is starting at the same time as the second level is starting -- so according to the story, when you start the second level as the second pilot, the first pilot hasn't even picked up the weapons from the end of his level yet, but he has already given them the second pilot!
I hope that isn't too confusing.

My second concern is much more simple:
The end level screen: should it really say the mine or facility was destroyed in missions where you didn't destroy the mine or facility?

Yeah, NP.

Oh, and regarding the weapons between pilots and ships, yes, they are suppposed to be transfered from ship to ship.

At first, I had planned some possible simultaneous missions on the levelset, but after thinking about that precise fact about the weapons between ships, I re-organized it a bit, without simultaneous missions, but with some 'jumps' on the story between pilots (specifically between Pumi and Shinnomeh).

If you're curious about this, this is the order of Pilots and Ships during the mission:

Levels 1 -> 6 : Pumi (Vertex9) - Standard Ship
Levels 7 -> 11 : Scorpia-EX - Light Ship
Level 12 : Pumi (Vertex9) Returns - Standard Ship
Levels 13 -> 14 : Shinnomeh (Hole) - Heavy Ship
Level 15 : Pumi (Vertex9) Returns again - Standard Ship
Levels 16 -> 17 (Last Level) : Shinnomeh (Hole) - Heavy Ship

The core cannon may be available (although very hard to get) starting on Level 12.
As you see, Scorpia-EX (Light Ship) won't return after level 11, so you won't lose the Core cannon.

As the Heavy ship is the most powerful, I decided it would be availalble in some of the hardest levels in the game that I've plannned (13,14,16 & 17, the last one).
It will be also available on Secret Level 2, making a total of 5 levels played with the heavy ship.

Taking secret levels in account, the Standard ship is the most used one.

Standard Ship (Pumi's missions) : 10 levels (including 2 secret ones)
Light Ship (Scorpia-EX' missions) : 5 Levels
Heavy Ship (Shinnomeh's missions) : 5 Levels (Including a secret one)

Is level 13 still PMC Feeding Halls?
I definitely want to find out more about that level (and contribute to it).

Yeap, Level 13 is Feeding Halls.
Of course, if you want you can contribute with it. :)

As for lately, except on some Sundays and Mondays, I'm almost always connected to Steam, so you can find me there for sure (and now that you asked about times, as we're on the same time zone, I'm usually connected from 2pm to 12pm (some times earlier, some times later).
