Fast and Furious - Wolfie's Tea Room

Postby darkflamewolf » Thu Jan 12, 2012 12:21 pm

Blarget dared me to remake one of the most smallest, boxiest levels to ever...er...grace the Descent MP scene. Well I took him up on his dare and I made this extravagant level based off the original design. Its small, fast, and furious! Never a break!
I hope people enjoy it!

Short of having someone else take screenshots for me, my laptop out here on deployment can't really play XL. It likes to crash 10 seconds into any level I play. And I have -pured2 on and all extra features turned off. Otherwise, you know I'd take XL screenshots. I just can't right now.

DFW, simply don't post screenies if you aren't going to do it respectfully.

It's that simple.....

um...I DIDN'T post screenies here. Nothing was taken down by Diedel. I simply didn't post screenies. I WAS being respectful by NOT posting them here. Come on, you think I'd try and insult Diedel again purposefully? I'm really trying hard NOT to.

Right, but this time you link to a site with them...

Try cropping the logos out so the lvl in question is neutral to either side.

I should have expressed myself clearer. The screenshots are posted at the Descent Mission Database, and ofc Wolfie is free to post screenshots from any Descent version she likes there.

My comment was intended to be somewhat ironic. I know very well that I have no right to tell Wolfie what Descent version to use for screenshots (or playing), and I would never try to. I can argue and try to convince, but not force people into using XL.

It's a bit sad for me when all (or most) Descent screenshots start to show the Rebirth logo, probably giving it an exclusive place in public attention and thus making people unaware of the fact there is a better alternative, but it's up to the D2X-XL users and level authors to change that. Looks like a typical case of better marketing prevailing over better quality. Makes me wonder whether DLE-XP should stop supporting other Descent versions though.

So calm down everybody, and Wolfie, no offense taken here. :) The only thing I demand is to not post any screenies with a Stillbirth logo here.

Wolfie, did you try to simply add "-use_shaders 0" to d2x.ini, disable all effects (via the checkbox at the top of the effects menu) and use "standard" lighting with D2X-XL on your laptop? That might work better than -pureD2.

The Tea Room level is pretty nice. It would look even nicer if it had a real skybox ...

True true, why don't you make an XL only version? ha ha You always did like tinkering with my levels :P Right now focusing on my next level project but I'll gladly pop it in the zip file (the XL version of the level if its ever finished) and reupload it to the DB so people have that choice.

Well, if you provide an XL screenshot on the DMDB for it ... ;)

Edit:

I have messed around a bit with the level, adding a skybox. While doing so I noticed a major problem with your lighting. You seem to only test your levels (or this level) with basic lighting, which is pre-calculated by DLE-XP. Here you can change the range of the light sources and this make a level arbitrarily brighter (or darker). With D2X-XL's other lighting methods this does not work. D2X-XL has its lighting presets which have been oriented towards giving similar results to default lighting settings in DLE-XP; if you make a level brighter with DLE-XP to make it look bright enough with basic lighting in D2X-XL, it need not, but may be too dark with D2X-XL's other lighting methods.

Edit 2:

Using XL for this level yields another advantage. With the standard version, respawning powerups may appear in level areas inaccessible for the players. With D2X-XL, you can give these segments the attribute "blocked", which has two advantages:

1) No powerups will spawn there
2) You don't need to use walls to prevent players entering them

looks who is talking! I tried to get you to take some screenies of my most recent levels in awesome XL glory, but you just dropped off the map this week! :P So I wasn't going to delay release for a couple of screenshots!

Which level(s) do you need screenshots to be taken from, and what size do you want them to be (width x height)?

Here are screenies in HD (1280x720):

O_O AWESOME! I should come to you for Azure Catacombs to take some screenshots! LOL
Those are AMAZING!

Update! The floor of bricks has been lowered by 2 units to better claim Smart Missiles and Bomb packs. Anymore and you run the risk of getting stuck on the cropped brick railings overlooking the waterway. So 5 units high is the new 'ground' cube height. That should alleviate 'vacuum cleaning' in this level. LOL The missiles will still appear there, but they are more easily acquirable. (or should be anyway)
Note to Diedel: I'm well aware of the 'blocked' feature you described, but since XL users love the level. (and was a BLAST this morning with 8 players!) I made this change for them. Don't get pissed at me. >_> :clue:

The floor of bricks? Which level - Tea Party, right?

Why should I be "pissed"? It's your levels. I often improved published levels of mine myself due to user feedback.

Did you try my recommended XL settings for your laptop? If you did, did they work?

Btw, my main computer's monitor is a HP one with an S-IPS panel. On my Linux box I am having a Samsung monitor with a TN panel. You have to see it to believe the difference in image quality. On the S-IPS panel, these screenshots look vibrant, with brillant colors. On the TN panel they look dull and like covered in mist in comparison.

Btw, you can have a DELL 24" S-IPS monitor (1920x1200) for significantly less than 300 Euros these days (I paid more for my Samsung 24" TN monitor two years ago).
