Beware of ounce

Postby Alter-Fox » Sun Sep 21, 2014 2:44 pm

I'd plan to do a Let's Play of PM as well, only my new laptop and my headset are incompatible.
Hopefully I can find some way around that before you're done Pumo, so I can do a blind run. Those are always the most interesting to watch. :D

Yeah, a blind run would be an awesome way to discover all the new stuff you're gonna find on PM. ;)
I need to work fast if I want to see the LPs of you and wolfie!

Update:
After some struggling (I'm still not as good when using 3D modeller programs as I would like), I've managed to import the Metalbeast weapon models to the modelling program, and made some small changes on the Plasma model to make the all new Pulser and Powered Pulser powerups:

The Powered pulser is red and with a slightly sturdier shape.

I always talk to myself when I'm playing anyway. Would be nice to give it some purpose and a reason to be a bit silly.

Nice models although... they look very angular compared to how you had the sprites. I guess you're going for a new look.

Well, in some aspect, and as I changed some weapons completely, yeah, I'm making some kind of reset and goin' for a new look, but another reason for this is due to my lack of time and 'hardcore' modelling skills. :(

Originally, the sprites were modelled on Bryce, a very easy program to use but not very professional (you could say that compared to real 3D modelling apps it's almost like a game). Exporting the models I made on Bryce is not possible due to the lack of exporting features it has (it just exports carved details, but not the main primitives used as the model body).

As I'm not a pro at 3DS and I want to invest more time at level-making and other vital models (like Hosako ships), I choose to use pieces and parts of Metalbeast (that even include UV mapping, fortunately) models as assets to make my new weapon models, so I'm limited to some extent by the angular shapes of those weapons.

Now, the weapons that feature complete Spherical shapes (like the Nucleon) are easier and quickier to make.
So that one will have its characteristic spherical body, fortunately. :)

There's another alternative (but it will make me loose some UV mapping and would need to invest some extra time on that):
Replace the Plasma body I used by one made by me on Wings3D (I'm better at Wings3D than at 3D Studio).
But I will decide about doing that later, as I'm already busy with the modelling of the ships in general (heavy and light ship, Hosakos, etc).

OK, I'm checking out a few 3DS tutorials to round things up.

I can't promise anything, but perhaps I may be able to give it more of the rounded shape of the original sprites (or at the very least a fusion between both styles) easier than I thought, so stay tuned Alter! ;)

I like it, it looks like a good compromise between the two styles.

Cool! Then I will try to use this kind of style on some of the other weapons.
I just needed a couple of 3DS modifiers and moving/scaling stuff here and there to get it done. :)

lol, I see, good to know the new designs are optimal for your taste. :)

I will be absent most of the next week (up to the thursday) due to my usual traveling, as I'm going to my medical control appointment, to get checked and see if everything is ok.
So I won't get too much time to work on Pumo Mines during the next days, but will resume the work as soon as I get back.

Big, BIG, BIG NEWS!!

Kruel gave me permission (after two months~ after I sent him an E-mail) to use his KTML level for Pumo Mines!
As KTML (Kritical Mass Testing Lab) was originally a level made for a canceled mission project he was contributing to, I thought of asking him about use it on my project and he gave me full approval!!

Reference link to the level: http://www.enspiar.com/dmdb/viewMission.php?id=255

He also gave me permission to use some other stuff from his works if I wish, but due to his fame, I think it would look too much like a rip to use those stuff.
However, I may think about using small pieces from his Multiplayer levels here and there.

So now with the stuff from WasabiMaster, Blarget, Wolfie, DarkHorse and now Kruel, Pumo Mines will feature a very high-quality design standard. :thumb:

(I'm still waiting for a reply from Kyouryuu/Solrazor to use Macron Station on PM, but I think he's not around the Descent community anymore, so I will discard that one for now).

A bit more of progress!

The current state of Level 8 & 9 (there are still some very WIP areas with rough squareish structures):

And finally, the last of the primary weapons, the Pion and Maser cannons:

And as a bonus, a small scene of Level 9 in game, featuring the all new D1/D2 rock textures I made. :)

Excellent news, MetalBeast finally replied and now I got official permission to use his models as base, so everything is cool. :)

Also it's very nice news as many users here on the community (me included) were worried about him, and I'm very happy to get a reply from him.
However, he can't check his E-Mail too often due to lack of time, as he's very busy with some family/private problems, but he's OK, thankfully.

So if anyone wants to contact him, just drop him a line to his E-Mail, but be patient and wait until he gets the time to check it.
