Custom sounds or cleaned originals ?

Postby Frustikus » Tue Feb 24, 2009 1:49 am

Custom sounds or cleaned originals ?

Because of my work on D1 sounds I listen very often to the original D2 sounds too. I recognized, that some of the hires sounds should be cleaned up too. So this my question: Should I first clean up the original D2 high res sounds or should I continue with my work on completely new sounds for D2 ? What do you prefer ?!

I'd like to have working D1+D2 hires sounds before any new developments, just to able to close that chapter coding wise.

hires D1 sounds

Postby Frustikus » Wed Mar 04, 2009 10:19 pm

Hi there,

Diedel asked me some time ago to make hires sounds for D1 by resampling the original ones.

Progress:
Resampling the original sounds (8 bit, 11 Khz, mono) to 16bit, 44 KHz, stereo: 100 % done.
I resampled the sounds one sample after the other with the creative wave editor. First time I used foobar2000, but this program brought a lot of distortion and noise to the sounds; therefore I started again with creatives wave editor, because the results were much better.
Unfortunately there is still a distortion and a noise problem. Therefore I have to edit all sounds with some special programs to clean them up. The sounds are filtered and worked over again with a software equalizer.
Progress:
Bosses: 100% done
Doors: 10 % done
all others: 30 %.

I don´t want to do a quick and dirty work, so the date of release will be sometime in April ...(at the latest)

That thing occurred to me since DTX been out a decade ago or so.

I made instantly - a SW version of Descent, were i put Dark Forces sounds.

Also i put there a sounds from Episode 5 Star Wars and later tried to put Starcraft sounds as well.

The point is - that everyone who wants to make custom sounds - are free to do it themselves and maybe

will put their sounds on the web for use by others - but initial sounds should be D2-D1 IMO.

EDIT: On second thought - well i must admit that after hearing fragment from German part of the Forum - named Plasma locking or so - I tend to agree that new sounds will definitely add to the game.

Progress D1 hires sounds

Postby Frustikus » Sun Mar 15, 2009 6:34 pm

Bosses: 100 %
Doors: 100 % (!!)
all other D1 sounds: 83 %.

The next steps:
1. I must work on some samples which I took from original D2 to use them with D1. This is possible because some samples are identical in D2 and D1.
2. I have to adapt the volume of each sound.
3. I must select the best filtered sound for the respective original.
4. Beta test.

You may not expect any miracles, but many samples sound better than ever. I was able to remove "white noise" from many D1 sounds:

that all sounds very good. I am very curious about the new sounds. The beta samples you've already published are really cool. Very good work.

Yeah, it's amazing. Frustikus didn't just resample them, he is trying all kinds of filtering, more and less of it, to find the best way to keep the original sound but get rid of their artifacts caused by their low sample rate and by resampling them.

But i also notice a lose of the initial sound. while new version sounds cleaner - it also lacks some data of the original sounds. good job and i guess one have to figure what to exchange.

While "cleaning" the sounds the initial sound is made somehow softer too. I tried to avoid this effect as much as possible. Sometimes I mixed the filtered sound with a part of the unfiltered sample to bring back more details of the original sound.

The original sounds of D1 are able to kill your speakers :P , I tried to remove some sharpness and scratchy sounds so that you can play descent @ higher volume without getting deaf ears.

X2!

All the resampled sounds I have heard so far suggest that they are very true to the original and that Frustikus has sacrificed as little of their character as possible to bringing their overall quality to an acceptable level. For me some of his processed sounds even are better than the original (his version of the lava hiss e.g. actually sounds like heard from inside the ship and not like being right next to the lava as the original sound does). I really dig them.

Shouldn't they be better by definition? :P (haha double meaning)

:D Yeah, that would be cool...
Most people think, a low quality sample (8bit, 11 KHz mono) will sound better after upsampling to 16bt, 44 KHz, stereo. The opposite actually happens. While converting a sample from 8bit 11 KHz to 16bit 44 KHz noise and artifacts are added to the sample and the quality impairment depends on the used software too. Because of the bad quality of the d1 sounds (mono) it was absolutely necessary to filter these sounds.

D2 sounds will be filtered too

Postby Frustikus » Thu Mar 26, 2009 12:28 pm

Hi,

the beta test of the hires D1 sounds has started.
I have to wait for the first reports from the beta testers. During the waiting period I will start to remove any noise from the d2 hires samples whenever this is neccessary.
