There is another way to get it working in D2X-XL (which I find works better).
Make a folder called "mods" in the D2X-XL main folder (if there isn't one already). Make a folder with the same name as the .hog file for your level. Make a folder called "textures" inside that folder.
Place your custom door inside the "textures" folder, with the same name as the "stock" door texture that you want it to replace. I think you need to have a #0 after the texture name (but before the file extension, for example: door47#0.tga).
This is what I do whenever I have a custom door texture (usually one from Irontower's mod or DFW's quake mod) or a sign or screen texture (usually one from the D1 hires texture set), as it seems to work better more often. For any other generic "wall" textures I use a pog file to reduce the potential size of the mods folder.
One thing to note: The texture will show up as the stock texture in DLE-XP, but it should show up as your custom texture in-game.
