No. It contains the robots and weapons that some of the robots use. If you don't have it, you just don't have those robots and so the levels can't be made to work. (Well, the game could replace them with other robots you do have, but what would really be the point?)

Why not just play around with it until you see a problem? That's what I would do.

I'd also be interested in knowing whether or not the d2x.ham is needed. I tried this Vertigo download (no d2x.ham) and it appears to play fine, but there might be something I'm missing.

Well, there's no rocket science about this and I'm pretty sure a ticket is not needed for this. ;)

It's just that the version of Vertigo at Planetdescent has D2X.HAM embeded into D2X.HOG.
That's the only difference between the PD and the original version, and that's why you get the Vertigo robots there.

D2X-XL can play both versions, with the D2X.HAM on the Missions folder or embeded into the HOG file.

So, to avoid confussion, I think I will close the ticket so this won't cause any extra work or confussion to Diedel, taking in account this is not a bug at all.

I hope this has helped to understand this issue. :)

EDIT: Oh well, it seems Diedel already closed the bug ticket. He's obviously the fastest gun on this town!

Because the original DOS version REQUIRED d2x.ham directly on the missions folder as a way to check wether you have vertigo correctly installed, or not. That was the way it was programmed.

I'm not completely sure about the Win95 version, but IIRC, both the Win95 version and D2X-XL (and I think also Rebirth) doesn't needs the ham file there on the Missions folder as a must, as just on the HOG file will be enough to play the mission.

d2x.ham is contained in d2x.hog. You don't need it elsewhere.

KakHome wrote:I just tried copying my d2x.hog into my data folder, renaming it d2x.ham, and normal Descent II STILL won't recognize it.

That's because d2x.hog isn't d2x.ham, it contains it. Renaming the extension will just make D2 think it's corrupt (or at best contains no useful data). If you extract d2x.ham using a HOG manager tool and put that in the D2 directory there are better odds of it working. Notably, you will have to do that for other Vertigo-enabled missions to work, since if they don't have a HAM file already in them, I suspect even XL/Rebirth won't just automatically search the d2x.hog in your missions folder.

Edit: Actually, I am mistaken on this. A fully-functional Vertigo installation does not have d2x.ham in the DESCENT2 folder. It just needs the d2x.hog file and that's it. Plus hoard.ham (in the DESCENT2 folder) if you want the game mode. Thus, it is as Diedel said; extracting the HAM serves no purpose.

I believe there's a different executable for Vertigo as well, which might be why it doesn't work for you.

Man, there is an awful lot of quoting going on.

KakHome, 2 things.

1) No need to quote someone if you are replying to the post directly above yours.

2) Please try and quote only the relevant part of a post.

These things minimize the clutter and reading time for some people.

Thank you!

It is correct that the Win95 version does not need the HAM.

Also before I got a real D2 Vertigo I had one that was more ore less cracked together so I was able to play missions that supposedly required D2 Vertigo with custom bots. Without the .hams only the bots in the .hxms would be read and the rest would be replaced with default bots. I fondly remember playing Entropy 2 with class 2 drones in the mix.
