Location of texture GAUGB_0x

Postby Sykes » Thu Mar 15, 2012 5:00 pm

I started a texture modification project a couple years ago, and I was retexturing the pyro models with new colors for players 9-16. Not only did I have to change the pyro models, but I had to change the little icon on your HUD that shows your ship color (the one with the shields around it). I managed to find those textures, but I can't remember where I found them.

The textures are named GAUGB_01, and there are 8 of them, going up to GAUGB_08. They contain the texture that shows your pyro as a small icon, and it shows you what color you are. Does anyone know where to find these? I used Windows search, but as always it came up with nothing.

You can find the textures inside the PIG files, and you can extract them using DTX2.

After extracting them, for use on D2X-XL modding, you need to save them as TGA and put them either at the main Textures folder or on your specific mod Textures folder and you should be done. :)

Wait, so hires versions of these textures don't already exist? D2X-XL is still using the ones from the PIG file?

Yeap, D2X-XL only has Hi-res textures for the Reticle and the Cockpit itself, but not for all the extra small cockpit elements.

I'm very tempted to create hires versions of them using all 16 colors for each ship, but that means I would also have to create shield textures for every level of shield, around each ship... It's something I could do, but if someone else hasn't done it yet, there's probably a good reason for it. I probably shouldn't get into it.

Nope, the shield level texture is a separate one from the small ship with different colors on the gauge.

The shield level texture is used universally on all ship colors, and is the one called Gauge06b.
The small colored ship gauge texture is Gauge01b, and it's the one you're interested on.

Man, I could only understand half of that. I'll dig around in the PIG file and see what I can find. I get the feeling it's something more than I can handle, especially because I've never done any texturing before, but I'm really interested in it.

Is there any other way to open a PIG file other than DTX2? It was hard enough finding where to download it, and Windows won't let me start it up. Says it's incompatible with my version of Windows.

Hi Sykes,

are you working with a 64bit windows7? Then you can't run DTX2 as it is an quite old 16bit software. But you can install the winxp mode and under a virtual winxp the program should work. Unfortunately i haven't installed any virtual windows at the moment, so I am not able to test it.

I actually used DTX2 on a Windows XP VM running under 64-bit Windows 7 for working on Azure Catacombs; it definitely is possible. The underlying RemoteApp stuff is a bit screwy at handling windows sometimes though, sorry about that.

That sounds like an overly complicated solution for just browsing the contents of a .PIG file. Can no programmer nowadays create a simple program that runs in an x86 environment that can read the contents of a .PIG file? Oh well. I'll look into it. Thanks!

It could be done. You'd just need to find someone to do it :)

I've got a virtual XP x86 machine running here. If you can send me the installer for DTX2 and a list of all the textures you need extracted I could help you out this weekend. PM me and I'll give you my email.

Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what I'm looking for. I was wanting to browse through it myself to see what's available, how it all fits together, and what I would need to change. I appreciate the offer though. I'll find some way to get it to work. If XP is all it requires, I can just use my dad's laptop.

Well if there was some way of getting in contact with the original dev of the program and get him to release the source code to Diedel....?
I'm sure Diedel could fix the problem! :muscle:
